Apple recently started a countdown for the 10 billionth app and launched a contest to give a $10,000 iTunes gift card to the person who downloaded it.Apple's live countdown timer for is 1 Billion App Countdown promotion is almost real-time, and is a step better than when they did the 1 Billion Song Download a few years ago.

At the end of September 2009, 2 billion apps had been downloaded from the store. In January 2010 the number was 3 billion. The number has more than tripled approximately one year later, showing the strength of Apple’s app ecosystem, which now encompasses three major devices: the iPod touch, the iPhone and the iPad.
However, it took just over a week for the app store to generate 250 million downloads, a testament to the incredible growth of Apple’s iPhone and iPad App Stores and, most recently, its Mac App Store.
The median revenue per developed application is estimated to be $700, while the average costs range from $15,000 to $50,00.In April 2009, Apple announced the apps which had the most number of downloads since the store was launched. Among paid apps, the Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D, by Activision Publishing, was number 1. Among free apps, Facebook was number 1, and Google Earth was number 2.
The App Store is accessible from the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad via an iOS application by the same name. It is also the only way to directly download native applications onto an iOS device without voiding the warranty
