The Coming of Age of EBooks : Infographic

Via Link is now selling more Kindle books than paperbacks and hardbacks combined, with its UK business shifting twice as many e-books as hardbacks.

Gordon Willoughby, the European director for Kindle, called the UK rate of Kindle purchases "truly astonishing" considering the company has been selling hardbacks for 13 years, and Kindle books for nine months. Since 1st April 2011, for every 100 hardcover books has sold, it has sold 242 Kindle books. The figure excludes free Kindle books but includes hardcover sales even if there is no equivalent Kindle edition.

Founder and c.e.o Jeff Bezos said the American company "never expected" Kindle books would outsell both paper and hardback covers together as quickly as it has. has sold three times as many Kindle books so far this year as it did during the same period in 2010. Bezos said: "Customers are now choosing Kindle books more often than print books. We had high hopes that this would happen eventually, but we never imagined it would happen this quickly—we've been selling print books for 15 years and Kindle books for less than four years."
The LA Times reports on a Cowen & Co. survey that says Amazon’s Kindle has 76% of the e-book market, and is expected to have sold $701 million worth of Kindle e-books by the close of 2010—up 195% from the previous year.

The report notes that the iPad (and other platforms that have the Kindle Reader app) has helped Amazon by making it possible to buy Kindle e-books without having to own a Kindle itself. In fact, the survey notes that 20% of Kindle e-book purchasers don’t actually own a Kindle.

The "iPad is not having a negative impact on Kindle device or e-book sales," according to the report, written by Cowen analysts Jim Friedland and Kevin Kopelman. "In fact, we think the adoption of tablets will boost Kindle e-book sales."

The report suggests Amazon’s market share will gradually decline to 51% of the market (and Apple’s will rise from 5% to 16%) by 2015.
The main advantages of e-book readers are better readability of their screens especially in bright sunlight and longer battery life. This is achieved by using electronic paper technology to display content to readers.
