Cost of Living in US : Infographic

Luanda : World's Most Expensive City

Angola's capital city Luanda has replaced Tokyo as the most expensive city in the world for US expatriates according to the latest Cost of Living Survey from Mercer. Tokyo is in second position, while Ndjamena (Chad) is now in third place. The survey's table of the world's 50 most expensive cities includes 10 from Africa.

Last year, similar research by ECA International already put Luanda (Angola) first and Tokyo second. A report published by the Swiss Bank UBS in 2009 has Oslo as the world's most expensive city, followed by Zurich and Copenhagen.

The fundamental flaw of all cost surveys is that they convert local prices into US dollars, which means that any changes are as much the result of currency fluctuations as of price inflation. In surveys by ECA, UBS, Mercer and EIU the cost of living in cities outside the US dollar zone becomes more expensive if the dollar weakens against local currencies even when prices remain unchanged or indeed fall.

A good example are cities in the United Kingdom. During the past three years the pound sterling has both weakened against the US dollar and the euro - from $2.10 to $1.5 and from €1.50 to €1.23. Therefore London and other British cities have become considerably less expensive for anyone travelling to the UK from Europe or the US, while at the same time the cost of many imported items, including gas and oil, increased due to the diminished purchasing power of the pound. In 2008, according to Mercer, London was the third most expensive city in world, while only two year later it is ranked 17th.

The world's most expensive big cities in 2010
(The index is based on cost of living expressed in US dollars. Therefore, if the dollar weakens against the local currency of a city, the city becomes more expensive and moves up the index, even if prices expressed in local currency remain the same or go down.)

New iPhone 5 to Launch in July 2011

According to CrunchgearThe rumor states that the new device, aptly called the iPhone 5 would be released some time early 2011, and would hopefully get people to forget about what’s currently plaguing the device

11

Lots of speculation is going around on the new iPhone 5... in HD!!
Verizon Wireless is currently testing a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 and 5 and Verizon confirms they are making network changes to bring the iphone to their network. The new iPhone 5 is going to be loaded with awesome new features like video chat on 3g and 4g (no longer restricted to WiFi only), face recognition and extreme downloading

Apple is also looking to jump beyond its standard 3.5-inch iPhone screen to 4 inches, according to the site Digitimes.Taiwanese site Apple.pro reports (via AppleInsider) that Apple has been testing three separate prototypes for the fifth-generation iPhone,.Sources say that  iPhone 5 includes a slide-out keyboard and a more competitive camera.

There are three iPhone5 prototypeone is a sliding cover which Is the introduction of the keyboard after the side cover.Since the iPhone 4’s launch, Samsung helped to make 4-inch displays the new standard for Android phones with its Galaxy S line.

WIth competing devices moving to 4 inches and beyond (Samsung’s upcoming Infuse 4G will sport a massive 4.5-inch display, while Dell is now positioning the 5-inch Streak as a smartphone), Apple simply has to bump up its screen size to compete.Acording to Digitimes Apple reportedly will change the screen size of iPhone to 4-inch for its fifth generation iPhone to compete with the Google Android platform in the 4- to 7-inch smartphone market, according to upstream component suppliers.

Most recently, the site posted photos of a small Apple-branded touchscreen that appeared a few months later in the company's latest iPod nano.

According to Tech site Mashable reports "

The interesting thing about all these rumors is that each one suggests Apple is more concerned than ever about competing with Android devices, many of which feature huge screens, massive cameras and physical keyboards already. For example, many top-of-the-line Android models feature 8-megapixel cameras in contrast to the iPhone 4‘s 5-megapixel model. A couple devices in non-U.S. markets even top that spec; the Altek Leo features a 14-megapixel camera. Without question, the trend is toward more megapixels with every passing month.

Low price iphone To Launch Soon

There have been a number of published unconfirmed rumors in the last week, including those in Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal that Apple plans to launch a smaller, more affordable iPhone - an iPhone Nano, if you will. According to yesterday's story in the Wall Street Journal, the new iPhone - codename N97 - will be available some time this year for about half the cost of the current iPhone 4.

Wall Street Journal  reports that  Apple  is working on the first of a new line of less-expensive iPhones and an overhaul of software services for the devices, people familiar with the matter said, moving to accelerate sales of its smartphones amid growing competition.

The new phone—one of its code names is N97—would be available to carriers at about half the price of the main iPhones. That would allow carriers to subsidize most or all of the retail price, putting the iPhone in the same mass-market price range as rival smartphones, the person said. Apple currently sells iPhones to carriers for $625 each on average. With carrier subsidies, consumers can buy iPhones for as little as $199 with a two-year contract.

A few  industry watchers  who saw a prototype of the phone late last year, said it is intended for sale alongside Apple's existing line. The new device would be about half the size of the iPhone 4, which is the current model.

Apple's work on the iPhone  comes  as the cellphone market is heating up. Nokia Corp. last week said it would adopt Microsoft Corp,'s Windows Phone as the Finnish company's main smartphone operating system. Hewlett - Packard Co. meanwhile unveiled a tablet computer and smartphones based on a platform the company acquired last year.

Apple Launches App Store Subscription

Apple® today announced a new subscription service available to all publishers of content-based apps on the App Store℠, including magazines, newspapers, video, music, etc. This is the same innovative digital subscription billing service that Apple recently launched with News Corp.’s “The Daily” app.

Subscriptions purchased from within the App Store will be sold using the same App Store billing system that has been used to buy billions of apps and In-App Purchases. Publishers set the price and length of subscription (weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly or yearly). Then with one-click, customers pick the length of subscription and are automatically charged based on their chosen length of commitment (weekly, monthly, etc.). Customers can review and manage all of their subscriptions from their personal account page, including canceling the automatic renewal of a subscription. Apple processes all payments, keeping the same 30 percent share that it does today for other In-App Purchases.

“Our philosophy is simple—when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.

Publishers who use Apple’s subscription service in their app can also leverage other methods for acquiring digital subscribers outside of the app. For example, publishers can sell digital subscriptions on their web sites, or can choose to provide free access to existing subscribers

Country Codes via Tags ( source :smashingmagazine )
World carbon dioxide emissions are one way of measuring a country's economic growth too.
And the latest figures - published by the respected Energy Information Administration - show CO2 emissions from energy consumption - the vast majority of Carbon Dioxide produced.

A reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions is not only the goal of environmentalists but also of pretty much every government in the world. Currently 192 countries have adopted the Kyoto protocol. One fo the aims is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% of the 1990 levels by 2012 collectively for countries starred on this list.
The map, above (you can get it as a PDF file here) is produced by Guardian graphic artists Mark McCormick and Paul Scruton. It shows a world where established economies have large - but declining - carbon emissions. While the new economic giants are growing rapidly. This newly-released data is from 2009 - the latest available.
On pure emissions alone, the key points are:
• China emits more CO2 than the US and Canada put together - up by 171% since the year 2000
• The US has had declining CO2 for two years running, the last time the US had declining CO2 for 3 years running was in the 1980s
• The UK is down one place to tenth on the list, 8% on the year. The country is now behind Iran, South Korea, Japan and Germany
• India is now the world's third biggest emitter of CO2 - pushing Russia into fourth place
• The biggest decrease from 2008-2009 is Ukraine - down 28%. The biggest increase is the Cook Islands - up 66.7%
