Samsung's 36 Million Smartphones Sales in Q4,Fails to Beat Apple

Samsung is among  the world's top technology firm by revenue, is  probably the only Tech giant that can take on Apple's   iPhone and iPad publicly and is locked in a bitter  competition  with Apple Inc over patent wars,even as rivals are increasingly turning to Samsung for components to power their tablets and smartphones, and that includes Apple too.Samsung makes mobile processors that power Apple's iPhone and iPad as well as its own Galaxy mobile products

Samsung posted a record $4.7 billion quarterly operating profit, driven by booming smartphone sales, and will spend $22 billion this year to boost production of chips and flat screens to pull further ahead of sm1aller rivals.

According to  research firm Strategy Analytics put sales at 36.5 million smartphones in October-December, with 3rd-ranked Nokia on 19.6 million. Smartphones account for around 40 percent of all Samsung's handset shipments.Samsung's telecoms business earned a record 2.64 trillion won ($2.35 billion) profit in October-December on increased sales of its flagship Galaxy smartphones assisted by its Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note handsets, which are estimated to have sold over 20 million units.

Apple, overtaken by Samsung in Q3,2011, regained its crown as the world's biggest maker of smartphones in Q4,2011 with record sales of 37.04 million iPhones, while Samsung has become the global no 2 smartphone brand with 36.5 million smartphones sold
The company is looking to weather a squeeze on memory chips through new revenue source even as s such as mobile processing chips and high-end OLED displays.
