Worldwide PC shipment growth for 2011 tallied up to 1.8%. IDC expects 2012 PC growth to round out at 5.0% for the year. "Many consumers are holding off making PC purchases at the moment because tablet devices like Apple's iPad are proving to be a powerful distraction," according to Bob O'Donnell, the vice president of Clients and Displays at IDC.

Growth through 2016 is expected to grow modestly (>10%) as the industry explores how to best accommodate consumer expectations for "ubiquitous computing".
