War of Mobile OS:Windows set to dethrone Apple by 2016

IDC released its Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report on Wednesday in which it provided the current market share values for iOS, Android and other smartphone operating systems. The research firm projects that iOS and Android will both peak in popularity before 2016, when Windows Phone will begin to eat into the market share of both operating systems — so much so, in fact, that it will surpass iOS by 2016."

IDC  forecast shows that Android’s market share for 2012 will hit 61% but that it will fall down to 52.9% by 2015. Likewise, iOS’s 2012 market share is expected to sit comfortably at 20.5% but is projected to fall to 19% by 2016. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Windows Phone’s market share is expected to grow from 5.2% this year to 19.2% in 2016. RIM’s BlackBerry OS is expected to remain relatively stable; IDC believes its market share will fall from 6% this year to 5.9% in 2016.
