The Evolution of URL Shortening Services

URL shortening is a technique on the World Wide Web in which a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) may be made substantially shorter in length and still direct to the required page. This is achieved by using an HTTP Redirect on a domain name that is short, which links to the web page that has a long URL.

The patent  for url shortening was filed in September 2000; while the patent was issued in 2005, patent applications are made public within 18 months of filing.
The first  Url shortening  website service was  TinyURL, which  was launched in 2002. Its popularity influenced the creation of at least 100 similar websites, Initially Twitter automatically translated long URLs using TinyURL, although it began using bit.ly in 2009.
