Internet access and mobility  has penetrated vast land masses which did not exist 15 years ago.While Fixed broadband in areas around middle east and north Africa has  failed to grow above 1%, however these nations have made better  progress when it comes to mobile broadband . As of 2015 African mobile broadband penetration levels is lower that 20%

  • By end 2014, fixed-broadband penetration will have reached almost 10 per cent globally 
  • By 2015, 34% of developing nations have  Internet  access compared to 80% across developed nations
  • Forty-four per cent of all fixed-broadband subscriptions are in Asia and the Pacific, and 25 per cent are in Europe.

The African mobile markets have been  one of the fastest growing across the world with an exploding mobile  market . One of the reason for this overnight increase in mobile users have  been " the lack of investment in  setting up  technical  infrastructure  for land lines and   wireless networks by these countries .The  African mobile market  has entirely been facilitated by investments in mobile networks  rather than the conventional  land line to mobile transformation.
 
Around 298 million  Africans  have internet access  with a mere 9% social media users  ( 103m) .Its mobile users exceed 900million with a 79% penetration.
Meanwhile a mere 7% use mobile to log into  their social media accounts

Internet Penetration vs Social Media Penetration across Continents

According to the latest  report on  Wearesocial , compared  the global internet penetration   to  the social media penetration. 
Expectedly  North American ranks no 1 with 81%  followed by Western Europe and Ocenia with  78% and 63%  penetration

In terms of social web penetration  , the ranking is identical with North America ( US +Canada ) among the top 2 regions , followed by Oceania and South  Africa
