UK Tablet Penetration to hit 50% this year
Smartphone penetration will reach 75 per cent of the UK population and tablet penetration will hit 50 per cent in 2014, according to Guy Phillipson, the chief executive of the Internet Advertising Bureau.
Smartphone penetration in the UK is set to hit 75 percent of the population in 2014, whilst tablets will hit 50 percent, according to recent comments from IAB at its IAB Engage conference in October. The GSMA has reported that global subscriber numbers are growing four times faster than the population. Despite huge growth in recent years, there’s still more to come.
Smartphone owners check their devices as much as 150 times a day according to some recent reports, whilst tablets have become “lean-back” devices that consumers will engage with for substantial periods of time. We know for example that users are streaming video in longer single sessions – for 30 minutes or more sometimes – delivering a captive audience for brands to engage with.

Samsung Unveils Flexible Android Smartphone - StumbleUpon
According to Android Authority Other known specs of Galaxy Skin include 1 GB RAM; 1.2 GHz processor; 8 MP rear camera and VGA front camera with auto focus, self-portrait, stop motion, action shot, and Panorama shots; and 1500 mAh battery. Connectivity-wise, it has Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0, and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n features. It will reportedly run on Android Jellybean (the next Google OS version after Ice Cream Sandwich), but there are speculations that Google will make a special version for it, namely Android Flexy.
Samsung is planning to start mass production of smartphone screens using bendable plastic rather than glass. The WSJ's Yun-Hee Kim talks about Samsung's experiment with flexible technology and why this can lower costs
Think a flexible smartphone is just science fiction? You might have to think again, thanks to Samsung. The Korean company recently unveiled Galaxy Skin, , Samsung has been showing off a flexible smartphone at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, heralding a day when we might fold up big phone or tablet screens as if they were maps.
"Our team was able to make a high-resolution display on extremely thin plastic, so instead of glass. So it won't break even if it's dropped and we can actually bend the screen," says Brian Berkeley, senior vice president at Samsung.
The screen uses organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDs.
Only a thin layer of these chemicals is needed to produce a bright, colourful screenFlexible OLED screens have been demonstrated for years, but the OLED chemicals are extremely sensitive to oxygen, so they need to be completely sealed off from the air.Volume production of flexible displays that remain airtight has so far stumped engineers
.
OLEDs are used in many Samsung phones already. For the bendable phone, Samsung laid the chemicals over thin plastic instead of glass.
