Lessons in Excellence : What Microsoft needs ro Learn from Google and Apple

The latest Trends on Web Marketing

Among The worlds biggest and the brightest, Technnology Companies  microsoft has beein the news more that any one else. While the world moves into cloud and open source, Microsofy has been favorite punching bag for its " Closed door ecosystem"

These org chart  of the tech titans showed how " Microsoft Org chart"  is responsible for the failure of the company  an has failed to launch innovative  products and get the first mover advantage. The chart shows Google, Apple, Oracle has been successful in the web2.era as their org chart  structure is robust and  innovative

A couple of years ago, the above satirical set of diagrams depicting the organization of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and other technology companies made the rounds on the Internet. The chart for Microsoft showed several isolated pyramids representing its divisions, each with a cartoon pistol aimed at the other.
However the structure at Microstf is all set to undergo a transformation and their  Internal Divisions will no longer gun down each other .

Microsoft would dissolve its eight product divisions in favor of four new ones arranged around broader functional themes, a change meant to encourage a tighter marriage among technologies as competitors like Apple and Google outflank it in the mobile and Internet markets

“To execute, we’ve got to move from multiple Microsofts to one Microsoft,” Steven A. Ballmer, the longtime chief executive, said in an interview.

If you manage to count the number of patent and lawsuits the Tech industry is fighting amongst themselves, probably you might continue to count them.. forever

Apple vs Samsung vs HTC vs RIM vs Microsoft : Its a battle that never shows sounds of ending , no mater how much money goes down fighting these battles.

Why does this happen, what are the kind of odds that one company might win and control 80% of the entire patent the tech industry has ... The chances are well 50: 50.Indeed, according to this Time magazine article, Apple and Google spent more money on patent litigation than research and development last year.

It is no surprise to anyone that Apple and are rivals. The duo have been involved in lawsuits in many different countries worldwide. Although the majority of courts have sided with Apple, the war is far from over. So who is copying whom?

RPX estimates that there are 250,000 active U.S. patents applicable to the smartphone. Assuming an average of 20 claims each, that is 5,000,000 restrictions on smartphone innovation.( RPX : stands for Reduce Patient Litigation costs)

Not surprisingly Smart phone patents account for 16 percent of active patents in the U.S, using RPX estimates.

Microsoft Products Contributing the Most Revenue in 2012

The Server and Tools division generated more revenue than the Windows division in the last fiscal year.

The Windows division is still much more profitable, earning $11.5 billion compared versus $7.4 billion for Servers & Tools. And one of the reasons Windows generated less revenue than Server & Tools is that Windows 7 is at the end of its run.

Server and Tools is the division that sells server versions of Windows, database software, Azure cloud services, software-development tools, system-management products and enterprise services. While the U.S. smartphone population has more than doubled in size over the past two years, the population of Microsoft phone owners has declined.

Apple's Most Selling Products Of All Time:

A record-setting quarter for Apple’s iPad led to a better-than-anticipated second quarter for the tablet market, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide

Quarterly Media Tablet Tracker. Total worldwide tablet shipments for the second quarter of 2012 (2Q12) are estimated at 25 million units; up from 18.7 in the first quarter of 2012. That represents a quarter-over-quarter increase of 33.6% and a robust year-over-year growth rate of 66.2%, up from 15 million units in the second quarter of 2011. IDC will release final shipment totals for the quarter later this month.

Apple’s iPad represented 97.2% of U.S. tablet web traffic in August, according to comScore. That is incredible dominance, given that it’s already been 1.5 years since the iPad went on sale.

The  Revenue chart ( source :Asymco ) shows which Apple products has been its best selling
  • The Mac business generates more Revenue than Windows
  • iOS powered devices generate more revenue than all of Microsoft’s products put together
  • Apple’s revenues grew 413% since Q2 2007 while Microsoft’s grew 26%
  • The release of Windows 7 had a marked effect on revenues in the launch quarter but the sales did not seem to grow above the previous version’s run rate ($4.2b/quarter vs. $4.7b/q on average).
But most importantly, whereas Apple’s growth has come from new businesses (iPhone and iPad), Microsoft has organically grown existing businesses. The condemnation of leadership at Microsoft should hinge on the absence of significant top line growth. Note that neither the Online Services nor the Entertainment and Devices divisions had appreciable net growth.

The iPhone did not exist five years ago. And now it's bigger than a company that, 15 years ago, was dragged into court and threatened with forcible break-up because it had amassed an unassailable and unthinkably profitable monopoly.

The company  which was virtually  heading towards bankruptcy  has beaten " the biggest IT Giant hands on fair and square. In the December quarter, Apple's iPhone business generated $24.4 billion of revenue. Microsoft's whole company, meanwhile, from Windows to Office to servers to XBox, generated $20.9 billion.

In terms of product revenues The iPhone also appears to be considerably more profitable than Microsoft.Assuming  that Apple generates the same operating profit margin on its iPhone business that it generates on its overall business--38%--the iPhone business generated about $9.3 billion of profit in the December quarter.

In Comparison All of Microsoft, products meanwhile, generated only $8.2 billion.

Apple Dethrones Microsoft, as stock hits a new high 664.75 a share

Apple today dethroned longtime rival Microsoft as the most valuable company in history based on the value of its stock, which climbed to around $622 billion.

Apple's stock hit a new high of $664.75 a share near midday Monday amid rumors the tech giant is poised to release new versions of iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV devices.

Apple topped the record of nearly $619 billion set by software titan Microsoft in 1999, during the famed dot-com boom years.

Apple shares began a rapid ascent on Friday after Jefferies investment bank analyst Peter Misek predicted the stock will hit $900 and predicted that the arrival of the iPhone 5 "will be the biggest handset launch in history."

A lot of us might be tempted to believe that
like Apple’s business is mainly about iPhone. And while it’s true that the iPhone is responsible for over half of Apple’s total revenue, it’s important to consider that Apple’s total pie is now significantly larger than Microsoft’s. Actually, it’s more than twice as large.

Last quarter, Microsoft brought in $20.89 billion in revenue. Apple brought in $46.33 billion.
