Selecting the most appropriate url formats for search engines: 

How doe a search engine decide the "  length of  the optimum size of url which is considered to be search friendly ?

While its true that search engines does give a fair amount of importance for the url specification, SE also are quite adept to  understand  and  interpret regular long urls with numerous hypens   and the extent to which webmasters  can use them for " spamming it " ( for example some seo webmasters at the sound of getting too excited and may use words like an actual url .) This only sends out the signal and tells the search robots and give them the sound of trumpets" telling them to discount the entire post/ url as a spam .. as its the result of an over excited adolescent seo webmaster

So how do you show the search engines about the content and its url parameters by ensuring you do this just the right way ?
1) Describe your  content :  if a user can  make an accurate guess about your content  by looking at the address bar, you have done your job
2) Use static URLs: dynamic url's are harder to index for both search and users
3) Descriptors not numbers:  never use  a random 1234 numbers or a set of numbers..when you can use brand/name etc
4)use lowercase: Although urls can accept both upper and lower always desist from using Uppercase

US Paid Search Grow 19%,in 2012, Mobile Search to see huge traction

The (SEM) industry  in  North American  is expected to  reach $23B by the end of 2012, which is an 19% increase from  $19.3B in 2011, 
according to Econsultancy Report released in September 2012 This valuation includes spending on paid search marketing and search engine optimization (natural search), and on search engine marketing technology. It excludes social media marketing spending (but does include pay-per-click or PPC ads on social networks).

Nearly 900 search marketers responded to this year’s survey, which was conducted online between March 12 and May 15, 2012. Survey takers represent 36 countries, with about 64 percent being in the US.
Among the key drivers changing the SEM industry includes

1)Changes to the Google algorithm  was  the single most cited  reason  why SEO and Brands were concerned   87% call the updates of the last 12-18 months “significant or highly significant.”This refers to Google’s Panda and Penguin algorithm update in  February 2011 and has undergone numerous updates since, as well as to the Penguin update that happened in late April. It hasn’t had nearly as many updates as Panda, but Google has warned about “jolts” still to come.)

2)The  mobile internet is being touted as the next big thing and Mobile Search is expected to gain huge traction  still keeping search marketers up at night, with 88% describing it as “significant or highly significant” up from 79% in 2011.

3)Integration and attribution :While  paid search was among the  the largest part of many digital budgets, marketers wanted to understand how this affects users and its overall impact, its interactions with other marketing channels and its effect on the whole customer journey.
4)Google's Adwords advertising still rules advertisings share of mind as  Facebook PPC shows signs of stagnating  in 2010/2011 seem to be reevaluating. The 2012 survey shows a drop in those reporting they regularly mount PPC campaigns on the social giant, down from 74% to 56%.

5)A whopping 86% of respondents predict 
digital budget growth, up from 77% in 2011, with 37% calling that growth “significant.

Twitter Acquires "AdGrok"Moving Towards Monetizing Tweets

It seems Twitter is finally moving to get its Revenue Model in Place .In their quest  for e generating ad revenue one of its priorities, it  has acquired AdGrok, a company whose software is designed to simplify the creation and management of campaigns using Google's AdWords search advertising service. While AdGrok aims to simplify search engine marketing campaigns, the platform could be adapted and used by Twitter to help monetize promoted and trending tweets

AdGrok, which came out of beta just two months ago, makes a tool that simplifies the process of setting up Google AdWords campaigns. It’s “Grokbar” lets customers look at any page on their websites and see data about the Google AdWords campaigns that point to it — including the cost of each campaign and how well it is working.Customers can see exactly how much they’re paying for each campaign and how well it’s performing.

Another cool feature involves integration with Shopify, a service that powers online stores. Sites that use Shopify can upload all of their inventory into AdGrok, create ad campaigns around each product, and then immediately end the campaign once they’ve sold out of a specific item. By  Integrating Adgrok, Twitter is looking to create a much more involved advertising platform for clients wishing to promote their messages through Twitter.

Buying AdGrok  is an indication  that Twitter is ready to start providing statistics and relevant data to its users, which has traditionally been handled by third-party services. The company has  earlier clearly spoke out against "Third party" providers, by apparently developing its own photo sharing feature and improving notification suppor

Starting today, the AdGrok team will start working full-time on Twitter’s “revenue engineering team.” Most likely they’ll be working on the microblogging platform’s self-service advertising program, which is currently in its beta phase and has many similarities to Google AdWords. The program allows small advertisers to buy their own promoted tweets, promoted accounts and promoted trends.

AdGrok offers free and paid services — the “standard” package is $20 per month. It was incubated at Y Combinator and has raised $470,000 from Chris Sacca, Russ Siegelman, Ben Narasin, and TriplePoint Capital. Customers include Eventbrite and Kiva.

On Page Optimization Factors

On page factors are those that directly affect your website. Here are a few on-site optimization factors which influence search engine rankings . On site Optimization factors should form an essential part of your web site marketing tools since it is in your control. Whereas of site factors are factors which you have very little control. Lets now see how to optimize your on site page factors.

Page Title :One of the most basic and important factors in your SEO strategy . A title should be a small summary of your website which should have your target keyword.

Keywords in url: The keyword of your vertical should and must be a part of your url name.

Keywords in domain names: This is clearly a no-brainer and common sense .If you have a widget site. It makes sense to have a domain , rather than as in page-name-with-hyphens.

Keywords in description metatag: Meta tag consists of the page title, keywords and the description. All these three factors probably plays a very dominant part in your on site factors. make sure they are targeted to the appropriate vertical your catering to.Try to make it less than 200 characters.Keyword stuffing will lead to get banned .

Keywords in Body: 5 - 20% - (all keywords/ total words)Some report topic sensitivity - the keyword spamming threshold % varies with the topic.

Keyword in H1, H2 and H3:Use Hx font style tags appropriately;

Page Navigation and Structure : No link should be within 3 to 4 clicks away from the Homepage. Make your links page a tree like structure.

Keyword Phrase order:Does word order in the page match word order in the query? anticipate query, and match word order.

Keyword prominence (how early in page/tag): The higher up the page , the better it is , Make it bold large font.

Keyword in Metatag keyword:Should Show theme less than 10 words.
Every word in this tag MUST appear somewhere in the body text. If not, it can be penalized for irrelevance.No single word should appear more than twice.If not, it may be considered spam. Google purportedly no longer uses this tag, but others do.

Keyword in Alt Text: This should be generally used for describing graphics and images. Do not fill it with deliberate keywords.Was part of Google Florida OOP - tripped a threshold - may still be in effect to some degree as a red flag, when summed with all other on-page optimization - total page optimization score.

Domain Name ExtensionTop Level Domain - TLD:Top Level Domain - TLD .gov sites seem to be the highest sites along sites seem to be given a high status .com sites excel in encompassing all the spam/ crud sites, resulting in the need for the highest scrutiny/ action by Google.

Hyphens in URL: The best method for giving your domain name is a space, where there can be no actual space.One or two= excellent for separating keywords (i.e., pet-smart, pets-mart)
Four or more= BAD, starts to look spammyTen = Spammer for sure. Get ready to get thrown out of google.

Age Vs page : An older website with fresh pages which gets updated constantly get more weightage as compared to new sites with fresh pages.

Redirect thru refresh metatags:Don't immediately send your visitor to another page other than the one he/ she clicked on, using meta refresh. Use 301 permanent re-direct.Don't immediately send your visitor to another page other than the one he/ she clicked on, using meta refresh.

Excessive cross-linking: Do not cross link your websites just for the sake of bringing incoming links within the same C block (
If you have many sites with the same web host, prolific cross-linking can indicate more of a single entity, and less of democratic web voting. Easy to spot, easy to penalize,easy to get thrown off by Google

Excessive changes in a page : Too many changes in a page is bound to raise suspicion. Google cna easily distinguish between old cache and new cache. Dont change your web pages randomly.This was possibly implemented to frustrate SERP manipulators. Did your last edit substantially alter your keywords, or basic theme for the sake of targeting SE? If yes .. expect significant changes in your SERPs.

Excessive Javascript :Don't use java scripts for redirects, or hiding links.

Just a reminder to everyone who reads this post . There are probably more on-site optimization factors . I have just tried to explain the most obvious and significant factors . I would love to get more information if anyone wants to share. I personally believe that you actually don't have to be a geek to Optimize a website . Search Engine Optimization is 80% common sense,10% knowledge and the rest 10% is pure unadulterated luck . Dont go our of your way to make your site compatible to SE, try to make a website instead for people and users whom you are targeting. Find out what users want. Google will find you eventually. SEO Tips For Google Rankings: Off Page Optimization Factors

Getting a top rank in Google can make or break your business . With more than 70% market share,no webmaster can afford to take it easy. Here are a few tips for optimizing your website and making sure you come on top in your keyword verticals in our industry.

There are two parts to your search engine strategy 1) Off page Optimization 2) On page optimization

Off-page Opimization consists of anything that is directly not connected with your own site,its all the external factors that fine tune your website and add value to your content offerings.While on page optimization is anything that is internally connected with your own website. Here are a few off page factors I have listed which plays an important role in getting a Good SERPs.In this post I shall be highlighting a few off-page Optimization techniques.

Positive Off Page Optimization Factors:

1) No of inbound links to your website: A higher number of relevant incoming links increases the PR and helps your SERPs.

2)Anchor text of your own link in other websites : Try to get links from website which the anchor text keyword your targeting. If you have a gaming site. ensure that you use the keyword games,gaming,online games.

3)Age of website linking to you: Older the page the better it is for your site. Google values old websites that have existed for some time , rather than new websites which has linked to you.

4)No of outbound links in the page which has your own link :Having a large number of outbound links is bound to decrease the PR of the site which has linked to you which in turn brings down your own page rank. This can play a negative role in SERPs.Make sure that the link page of the site which has your link does not, in any case have more than 50 links .

5)Page rank of the website Linking To You: try to get links from a higher PR site .Websites with PR:0 or a grey toolbar means that the site is either new or does not have enough credibilty to gain a Page Rank.

6) Acceleration rate of your inbound links:If you get links too fast .. you may be penalized by Google and they would dump you at sandbox .. Google algorithm assumes that you can only build links organically. A large number of links at a very fast rate is bound to raise suspicion regarding the authenticity of the links ( buying and selling links ,even though you are not doing so)

7) Theme of the page that has linked too. Similar the Theme the more favorable it is in terms of SERPs

8) Getting listed in Directories: try to get a listing in DMOZ( pretty Tough ). I have no idea how Dmoz accepts websites.

9) Page metrics Factors: Other Metrics like CTR, time spent on the website, Social Bookmarks. Dont ignore the social media, Try to add social bookmarks and social network buttons to your site,so that you cna get bookmarked by users more often,( more the number of social bookmarks, like sites like Digg,Reddit,Stumbleupon,Propellor, the more are the chances that Google will look upto your as site as favorable )

10.)Temporal Link Analysis : new links are not valued as much as the old links . Try to get all your links working. Keep a constant tap on them to see if they are broken or have been removed . Spent adequate time on maintaining your link partners.

11.) Stay Away From Link farms:Link farms are websites that has been permanently created for the sake of linking . Often you will see some Hotel sites linking to 20 other hotel sites often with identical content and links page.A link farm purpose purpose is to increase the Page Rank of the target page by driving one way links from multiple websites . The sole objective to these mini sites is to increase the PR of one site they wish to rank well in Google. Stay away from them or you risk bring a part of their network and face a permanent ban.
