Facebook Traffic from US and Canada Shows Decline


Although Facebook is still growing towards 700 million users, having reached 687 million monthly actives by the start of June, ( source  Inside Facebook Gold data service.) However .beyond the overall increase in  numbers, Facebook's traffic across certain key markets have been decling .Facebook lost 6 million users in the U.S. last month, dropping from 155.2 million to 149.4 million. That's the first time U.S. numbers have dropped in more than a year.

It also lost 1.52 million users in Canada, dropping to 16.6 million -- that's an 8% drop --  and 100,000 each in the U.K., Norway, and Russia.Total Facebook users were still up 1.7% thanks to growth in countries where the service got popular later, like Mexico and Brazil.

Most of the new users continue to come from countries that are relatively late in adopting Facebook, as has been the trend for the past year.

But overall growth has been lower than normal for the second month straight, which is unusual.
The company gained 11.8 million more people over May, following 13.9 million over April. In contrast, it grew by at least 20 million new users over the typical month in the past 12; while there have been a few months that have registered lower growth numbers, they have not been back to back.

 Analyzing this drop in numbers , Inside facebook  writes" 
Till Facebook reaches around 50% of the total population in a given country (plus or minus, depending on internet access rates in that country), growth generally slows to a halt, as we’ve noted before. So far, Facebook has been able to make up stalls and losses with big gains in heavily-populated developing countries like Mexico, Brazil, India and Indonesia. As you can see in the table above of the ten countries that gained the most users over May, this continues to be the case.

The Twitter Ecosystem Infographic

For much of the past year, the Twitter ecosystem has been in a state of flux. Ever since Twitter bought Tweetie and turned it into their own native iPhone app, third-party developers have been wondering where this would leave them. Further moves by Twitter into Android, iPad, Mac, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and other spaces have only compounded some of this fear. So Twitter has taken some time today in their developer forum to talk a bit about the state of the ecosystem and give some guidance.

Platform lead Ryan Sarver has a fairly lengthy outline of Twitter’s line of thinking with regard to third-party clients and services.

Sarver notes that Twitter views a “consistent user experience” as very important to them. And it’s something they’re going to hold third-party developers to a very high standard to maintain. But they don’t want them to mimic Twitter’s own experience with their native apps in order to do this. They’ve updated the API Terms of Service to reflect all of this.

Developers have told us that they’d like more guidance from us about the best opportunities to build on Twitter.  More specifically, developers ask us if they should build client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience.  The answer is no,” Sarver writes very matter-of-factly.

According to Techrunch, Sarver notes that according to Twitter’s own data, some 90 percent of active Twitter users now use official Twitter apps on a monthly basis to access the service.

We need to move to a less fragmented world, where every user can experience Twitter in a consistent way.  This is already happening organically – the number and market share of consumer client apps that are not owned or operated by Twitter has been shrinking,” he writes. ( Source : Techrunch)

According to Dick Costolo and Ryan Sarver, their ecosystem has grown to mammoth proportions, which include 
  • 600,000 developers
  • more than 13 billion API requests per day
  • 900,000 different apps
In the first quarter of 2011, Twitter observed
  • 41% increase in Tweets per day,
  • 38% increase in tweets in the US
  • 52% increase in monthly signups
  • 104% growth on Android, 72% on the iPad, 55% on the iPhone and 51% on Blackberry.
Jason Costa, Twitter’s developer relations manager highlighted the 5 key points of  Twitter ecosystem as Analytics, Content, Curation, Publishing and Enterprise. Twitter has smartly capitalized the power of independent developers by providing them the APIs. ( source :VatorTV )
