Google creates smart contact lens for diabetics - Silicon Valley Business Journal: "Google's latest moonshot project appears to be a smart contact lens aimed at enabling diabetes patients to measure glucose levels.

The company's secretive X Lab on Thursday said in a blog post that it is developing a lens that uses a wireless chip and a tiny glucose sensor planted between two layers of material designed for soft contact lenses to measure glucose levels in tears."

Google  is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to make the prototypes consumer ready,
Google isn't the first company to delve into such a device. Microsoft Corp., among others, has developed similar lens technology.

Women in UK to Outnumber Men in Tablet Usage

The UK tablet audience will grow significantly through 2017, according to an eMarketer report, ‘UK Tablet Users: 2013 Forecast and Comparative Estimates'. As newer, lower-priced tablet models become available and the market matures, the UK will see demographic shifts in uptake.

Marketer expects that 19.7 million people in UK  will use tablets regularly this year, totaling nearly one-third of the population. Adults ages 25 to 54 will be the core of the UK tablet population in 2013 and beyond.

 The largest single group of users between now and 2017 will be 25- to 34-year-olds, with 4 million members this year and 6.6 million by the end of the forecast period

eMarketer expects that more children under the age of 12 will use tablets than teens between 2013 and 2017. And this year, for the first time, women will outnumber men on tablets. 

If estimates are to be believed there will be 9.95 million female and 9.75 million male tablet users in the UK in 2013, equivalent to 50.5% and 49.5% of tablet users, respectively. Penetration rates among the respective genders will differ by just 1.4 percentage points this year, with males being slightly more likely to use tablets than females.

Samsung Drives Market Share by Dominating Share of Choice : Visible Measures: Samsung has been one of the companies that  has " seen its Smartphone grow exponentially in the last 3 years ..and for a brand that  has been a also ran till 2009 .. to an overnight star in  the highly competitive Consumer Electronics no mean achievement

Consider this, :Last year Samsung launched nearly 40 campaigns and garnered a True Reach of more than 280 million views. The consumer electronics brand that came closest to equaling that view count in 2012 was Google with 250 million views and then Apple with 92 million views.The brand started to show its viral prowess in 2011. That year, Samsung launched more than 20 different branded video campaigns and generated a True Reach® of more than 50.5 million viewers.

To date, in 2013, Samsung has already generated more than 288 million views, as of September. In 2012, when the brand’s Share of Choice peaked, its brand value also increased by 40% to reach $33 billion

Indonesia's Smartphone Ownership Grew 100% in a year, with 24% penetration

The above chart  compares  the  time taken  for consumer ownership  of Mobile Phones ( Feature Phone) a While it took 5 years for Feature Phones  to reach  84% penetration.from  10%  ( 2008 to 2013).

In Contrast Smartphones Penetration in Indonesia grew by 100%  ( 12% to 24%) in just 2 years

Smartphones are seeing a significant uptick in ownership in Indonesia, according to a study by an Australian market research company  The country has seen a huge rise in smartphone ownership in the last two years 

Between March 2012 and 2013, smartphone ownership doubled from 12% of the population to 24% as mobile phone ownership rose by 10 percentage points, reaching 84% of the population in March 2013.

eBook Readership Led by India, US and UK

Recent data from DigitaReader shows Russia having higher ereader adoption rates with 70% of readers having tried ebooks. 

 That’s much higher than the 23% of Americans who had read an ebook (according to Pew Research Center in December 2012). It’s even higher than the data from Scholastic which shows that 46% of kids in the US had read an ebook.

Meanwhile to Bowker Market Research’s Global eBook Monitor shows , India, U.K. and the U.S. are leading the world in e-book adoption rates, The study tracks consumer attitudes to and purchasing of e-books in major world markets. Samsung Set to Rule the Chinese Smartphone Market as 2013 sales to exceed 48million units,with 60% growth

Samsung sold a record 12.5 million smartphones in China during Q1 2013: Strategy Analytics - The Next Web: "The research firm’s latest figures are reported by the Korea Herald (via Sammy Hub) and are particularly impressive given that Samsung sold a total of 30.06 million smartphones last year in 2012

 This means that if Samsung  continues to sell their smartphone  and  follow the same trend its all set to , sell around 48million smartphones in 2013.Considering the fact that low cost Smartphone manufacturer like Huawei and HTC   are very aggresive  in the Chinese  Smartphone Market, Samsungs growth has been spectacular

Giiven its early progress this year, Samsung looks set to smash that record once again in 2013.

Strategy Analytics’s Q1 2013 data put Huawei behind Samsung in second place on 8.1 million units sold, having overtaken Lenovo — which has announced its intention to launch devices in the US within one year — which sold 7.9 million smartphones."

48% Growth in Smartphone adoption in India,in 2013

From 27 million to 40 Smartphone users in India. Indian Mobile market for smartphone has increased by 48%  according to neilsen research. In 2012 India had 27million users , Now the user base has increased to 40million, an increase in 13 million users in less than a year. The Mobile subscriber base in India is around 900 million ( Nielsen research )

Nielsen Informate Mobile Insights, an alliance between Nielsen and Informate Mobile Intelligence, polled more than 10,000 consumers in September and October 2012 across 46 cities in India to assess overall usage and device preferences.
The Indian Smartphone User study found that 93 percent of smartphone users own only one handset, making it their single source of infotainment on the go. 
The study also found that smartphone users in India overwhelmingly prefer mobile devices that operate on the Android operating system.While Symbian usage is also high in India, Windows, BlackBerry and iOS devices each only have single-digit market shares.

Acer Announces Weird Folding Laptop With The Trackpad In The Wrong Place - 

Acer announced a new  laptop that looks more liker a startship and less like a computing device 
 the  Aspire R7 .The ultra book  R7 is a bizarre hybrid of laptop, desktop, and tablet that flips and folds its way out of and into each category. It’s essentially a portable, multi-touch all-in-one PC.

The R7, which starts at $1,000, comes with a 15.6-inch HD touchscreen display, which, along with its trademark “Ezel” hinge, pretty severely limits it in the portability category. The  Aspire R7   goes on sale  on May 17 ,2013

One of the innovations of this laptop is its Ezel hinge design. The Ezel hinge is a flexible strip anchoring the display, and allows the display to sit vertically on the base, lie flat over it, or be flipped 180 degrees to float over the keyboard in "Ezel" mode. 

 The laptop also features an auto-reverse audio interface that moves the sound in whatever way the screen is oriented. The screen itself is an IPS (In-Plane Switching) display with a 1,920-by-1,080 resolution and 10-finger touch functionality

Multi Screen Consumption Patterns: How This Impact Brand Marketers


Media consumption is now 90 percent screen-based, whether that's watching Netflix on your Galaxy Note II, reading an e-book on a Kindle, or flipping through a magazine on your iPad. But the TV is still fighting for viewers' attention, and most of us give in - with gadgets in tow.

According to a new infographic from Uberflip, 97 percent of American homes still have a TV, while 81 percent have a PC. But 44.8 million people now have a tablet, while 112.4 million have a smartphone, and 70 percent of homes have a game console. It might not be an either/or proposition, however. A majority of people multitask while consuming content - 81 percent watch TV and use a smartphone at the same time.
