Infographic: Smoking Also Has Serious Financial Repercussions | Statista infographics via Statista

31st may is world no tobacco day.  On this day  we present you with some facts and figures on how global Tobacco industry has generated into a mean marketing machine and the top 10 most appalling Facts about global tobacco Company Misdeeds from the Famous Federal Court Ruling (source :american lung association)
On August 17, 2006, federal judge Gladys Kessler found the major tobacco companies—including Altria (Philip Morris) and RJ Reynolds—guilty on civil racketeering charges (i.e., organized criminal activity). On that day, she issued a final judgment and 1,683-page opinion that found the companies had been covering up the health risks associated with smoking and marketing their products to children for decades. And, finally, after many years of delay the tobacco companies were required to issue the "corrective statements" in newspapers and on TV in 2017 and 2018 that were originally ordered by Judge Kessler's decision.
Here are 10 of the most troubling facts the judge found in her ruling against these tobacco companies:
  1.  The tobacco companies "concealed and suppressed research data and other evidence that nicotine is addictive."
  2. . The tobacco companies "falsely marketed and promoted low tar/light cigarettes as less harmful than flavour cigarettes in order to keep people smoking and sustain corporate revenues."
  3.  The tobacco companies own internal records showed "that smokers switch to low tar/light cigarettes, rather than quit smoking because they believe they are less harmful."
  4.  The tobacco companies "recognised that smokers choose light/low tar cigarettes for a perceived health benefit defendants internally recognised that smokers rely on the claims made for low tar/light cigarettes as an excuse/ rationale for not quitting smoking.
  5. The tobacco industry spends billions of dollars each year on cigarette and smokeless tobacco advertising and promotions. In 2018 $9.06 billion was spent on advertising and promotion of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco combined—about $25 million every day, and more than $1 million every hour in the united states
  6. Price discounts to retailers account for 73.3% of all cigarette marketing (about $6.16 billion). These are discounts paid in order to reduce the price of cigarettes to consumers "

7. Starting in the 1950s and lasting at least through 2006, different tobacco companies "at different times and using different methods, have intentionally marketed to young people under the age of twenty-one in order to recruit 'replacement smokers' to ensure the economic future of the tobacco industry."
8. The tobacco companies "youth smoking prevention programs are not designed to effectively prevent youth smoking."
9. The tobacco companies "have publicly denied what they internally acknowledged: that ETS [secondhand smoke] is hazardous to nonsmokers."
10. The tobacco companies' internal records "recognised that ETS [secondhand smoke] is hazardous to nonsmokers."
 11. The tobacco companies' "marketing is a substantial contributing factor to youth smoking initiation."

the alt right website breitbart has just now declared war on kellogs,as the cereal brand pulls off advertising from the site

"the alt right website Breitbart has just now declared war on kellogs,as the cereal brand pulls off advertising from the site"

The Alt right website Breitbart has just now declared war on Kelloggs. Right wing news portal Breitbart is at war with the world’s largest breakfast cereal brand after Kellogg’s abruptly ceased advertising on the website on Tuesday, saying that it was not ‘aligned with our values’. The breakfast brands decision was met with fury by Breitbart’s editorial team who declared ‘#War’ on the business with the #DumpKelloggs” campaign which is exhorting its readership to refrain from eating the likes of Coco Pops, Rice Krispies and Frosties in retaliation.

Breitbart editor-in-chief Alexander Marlow said: “For Kellogg’s, an American brand, to blacklist Breitbart News in order to placate left-wing totalitarians is a disgraceful act of cowardice. They insult our incredibly diverse staff and spit in the face of our 45,000,000 highly engaged, highly perceptive, highly loyal readers, many of whom are Kellogg’s customers. Boycotting Breitbart News for presenting mainstream American ideas is an act of discrimination and intense prejudice. If you serve Kellogg’s products to your family, you are serving up bigotry at your breakfast table.

In response, Breitbart launched its #DumpKelloggs petition to encourage its vast readership and the followers of its #1 in the world political Facebook and Twitter pages to ban bigotry from the breakfast table by boycotting Kellogg’s products. ”

In October, the site drew 19.2 million unique visitors, up nearly 50% from 12.9 million visitors in the same month last year, according to comscore.Breirtbart is among the alt right news websites which has defended and stood up for Donald trump as the american presidential candidate and has been seen as one of Donald Trump's biggest support base. Breitbart took a pro-Trump stance during the campaign, supporting the Republican candidate’s views on immigration and national security. The company’s executive chairman, Steve Bannon, who is on a leave of absence, was Trump’s campaign manager and has been named chief White House strategist.

Breitbart in turn is has declared war on the Brand and breakfast cereal maker Kellogg Co. by launching a Twitter campaign #DumpKelloggs that encourages its readers to sign a petition and boycott the maker of such favorites as Froot Loops and Apple Jacks.

On Wednesday, Breitbart placed an article about its #DumpKellogs campaign in the top slot of its homepage. By early afternoon, the article had drawn more than 6,000 reader comments, many in support of the boycott. "Kellogg's decision to blacklist one of the largest conservative media outlets in America is economic censorship of mainstream conservative political discourse. That is as un-American as it gets,” Breitbart said in a statement. The cereal company said that it advertises on a large number of websites, “so occasionally something is inadvertently missed. In this case, we learned from consumers that ads were placed on and decided to discontinue advertising there.Since Most brands run ads via ad networks or third parties and Ad exchanges RTB ( Real Time Bidding),they dont often get to know where it ads actually are run and  cannot track all of its publishers.

Other companies that have pulled their ads from Breitbart in recent weeks include the insurance giant Allstate and the ad exchange AppNexus,Nest, EarthLink, Warby Parker and SoFi, according to Digiday. Last week, AppNexus deactivated Breitbart News after an audit of the site’s content determined that it violates the advertising network ban on hate speech.

Breitbart website was founded by Andrew James Breitbart in 2007 by conservative commentator and entrepreneur Andrew Breitbart was an American conservative publisher commentator for The Washington Times, journalist, author and television and radio personality on various news programs, who served as an editor for the Drudge Report website. Some of Breitbart’s most controversial stories have had referred to “Muslim invaders”, and a “Renegade Jew” and said “Women Should Log Off” the internet if they face online harassment.

marketing budgets of leading tech industry brands

"marketing and sales budgets of technology's leading company brands"

So how much does the world biggest brands on marketing ? The rule of the thumb generally is that " companies spend around 8 to 10% of their revenues on marketing. While that might  seem like a generalization. Most companies marketing spends is a factor of  what they earn.
However most Enterprise marketers say engagement is their most important goal (82%), followed by sales (81%), and lead generation (79%).
For example Microsoft spends an approximate  18% of their total revenue on marketing spends across digital, print, TV, offline, POP and other companies. Microsoft has seen a 12% increase YoY on their market budgets.

Intel's average spending on marketing  is 15% a compared to Apple's 7% and Google's 12%. The majority of  tech companies ' budgets has been on digital. Microsoft has spent more than $47 million for Xbox One ads on television this year, according to data from, which is 50% more than Sony’s $30 million.Microsoft’s has spread its ads across 37 different networks and nearly 1,000 unique shows. Sony’s campaigns have spread to 25 networks and more than 500 shows. Top networks include Fox, NBC, and ESPN.

Apple however increased its advertising spends dramatically by 50% to a record $1.8 billion last year in 2015 according to its annual report. The $600 million increase, for the year ending Sept. 26, was six times larger than the $100 million rise seen a year earlier to $1.2 billion in the year to September 2014 and $1.1 billion in the 12 months before that.Apple’s ad spend has tripled since 2010 when it was $691 million, rising to $933 million in 2011 and $1 billion in 2012.However ad spends constitute less that 1% of Apple's record profits of $53.4 billion on turnover of $233.7 billion,

How to display different content to search engines and visitors

A variety of strategies are used to segment content delivery. The idea is to serve content that are not meant for search engines in a un spiderable format( placing text in images flash files and plugins)

However dont use these formats for the purpose for cloaking, rather you should use them for if they bring substantial benefit to users If you want to show the search engines , you dont want visitors to see ,you can use CSS formatting( preferably not display:none) as the engines might have filters to track this
However keep in mind that  search engines are very way of webmasters to use such tactics. Use  cloaking only if it brings substantial user benefits

Tactics to show  different content for search engines and users  Robot.txt files : This file is located at the root level of your domain( which you can use to 1)Prevent crawlers form accessing non public from parts of your website 2) Block search engines from accessing index scripts, utilities or other types of code, 3) Auto discovery of XML sitemaps.

The robot.txt must reside in it root directory and should be in small case. Any other format is not valid for search engines

Syntax of robot, txt file : The basic syntax of robot.txt is fairly simple. You specific a robot name such as google bot and specify an action. Some of the major actions you can specify are

Disallow : use this to specify google bot not crawl your certain parts of your website
NoIndex : Use this page for telling the bots not to iindex your site in its SERPs. ( this might be used when you wish to hide duplicate content pages in your site)

heres an example of "robot.txt file"

User agent : Googlebot Disallow:
User agent :msn bot #Block all robot  tmp and logs directories ( the has symbol# )may be used for comments within a robot.txt file where everything after the # on that line be ignored

One additional problem webmasters run into , is   when they have ssl installed so that pages may served v iaHTTP and HTTPS .
However the search engine will not interpret this as robot.txt file at as a guiding their crawl behavior on
For this you need to create additional robots.txt file at so if you want toallow crawling of all pages served from your https server you would need to implement the following FOR HTTP user agent: * disallow FOR HTTPS user agent:* disallow:
