Alibaba set to invest in Micromax, plans to push its mobile OS to spur ecommerce in India

 Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is set to be in talks to invest in  one of India's biggest smartphone maker, Micromax, .Micromax has an 18 percent smartphone market share in India, and is one of the most competitive players in the market, which saw them fought off samsung last year

Alibaba is looking to market its own mobile OS known as YunOS, to push its e-commerce services across developing countries .By partnering with Micromax it can have an instant access and reach of captive consumers riding on its network. As ecommerce in India   increasingly integrated itself to the mobile ecosystem..connected devices like mobile and tablets will continue to be the gateway to gain a stronger foothold in India's e-commerce market which is dominated by domestic players Flipkart and Snapdeal.

The combined shipments of devices (PCs, tablets, ultramobiles and mobile phones) in India are forecast to total 300 million units in 2015, an increase o

f 4.5 percent over 2014, according to Gartner, “The traditional PC market will grow by 2 percent, with a 9 percent increase in the notebook market in 2015,”

Mobile continues its growth, and  are projected to grow 5 percent in 2015 (see Table ). Lower pricepoints  of smartphones and tablets with their increasing  penetration led by  better functionalities  have led  its high growth segment in the Indian mobile phone market. Global vendors, such as Samsung, LG, Motorola, and Nokia, along with local players like Micromax, Karbon, Spice, and Lava are doing well in the smartphone segment.

Is Micromax India's next Huawei ?! Commands 35% market share across feature and smart handsets

Micromax rules 35% indian feature and smartphones, Nokia do well in feature phone segment

  • Indian Mobile Handset Market Share :Big gains for Indian local assemblers   Micromax and Karbon as  Feature Phones Users shifs to Smartphones 

  • Total Handset Shipments Indian local Mobile Manufacturers are doing well in trying to replicate the Chinese Mobile Handset manufacturing Story in their country. Local mobile assemblers ,lead by Micromax, at number one along with Karbonn  Lava and others have managed to capture a market share of around 35% of the total handset shipments in that nation . Total handset shipments Includes both feature as well as smartphones
Global Giants Samsung and Nokia managed to hold 25% total handset shipments with 14.4% owned by Samsung,( 10.0% by Nokia )
  1. The Feature phone segment led by Micromax and Nokia with approx 14% each, followed by Karbonn with 11%.Not Surprisingly  as Samsung does not cater to this non smartphone segment, its share was 8% 
  2. In Smartphones : Samsung outplayed everyone else in the market with 25.3% marketshare while Micromax stunned and surprised  many analysts and industry with its best ever and first ever performance garnering an  impressive 19.1% marketshare  in one of the most competitive industry. Karbonn and Motorola garnered around 5% each and Nokia's smartphone marketshare in a country which it virtually ruled a decade ago  tumbled to an all time low with just 4%

Micromax To Launch a Windows Smartphone, with 5 MP camera

Micromax is working on a windows phone device and is planning to launch in sometime in June or July for rs 6999/ +tax The smartphone will have a 4.0 multi touch display with screen resolution of 800x 480p, a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus , 512 MB Ram and a dual core processor. The name of this Device is yet to be decided 

Micromax  marketshare in India is  17% ,
Indian Mobile market is led by Samsung, with 33% share, while home grown brand ,Micromax  is no 2 with   17% 

That Micromax is making a Windows Phone is not news, with the company’s CEO Rahul Sharma saying in October that they handset will be available in the middle if 2014. With the handset expected “soon” we may see the smartphone announced at Mobile World Congress with the rest of their 2014 collection. MicroMax Turns its back on Canvas 4 Pre Orders

One of the biggest Smartphone brands “Micromax was  building history,  well .. almost as the “ Canvas 4 had announced  that It was the first Indian Mobile Company who had  received 11,500 pre-orders for their new flagship smartphone the Canvas 4 Smartphone

All of last month, there were a lot of buzz  across the print and online media  on the” Pre Smartphone Canvas Booking . At the launch event of the Canvas 4, in New Delhi, Micromax was very proud to  They claimed that it qualified as the biggest pre-order in Indian smartphone industry history.

Well, it seems that was not the truth , as none of the users have received their smartphone’s  yet, considering all that hoopla, the execution seems to have gone very wrong. The Canvas 4 is now available for purchase 'off the shelf' in retail stores, and ships in a few days from most leading e-commerce websites. Yet, several people who plonked Rs. 18,000 of their hard-earned 'paisa' just to be amongst the first few to get the device have STILL not received their devices from Micromax.
