Global Advertising Spends To grow 33% by 2013

Global internet advertising expenditures will rise about 33% between 2011 and 2013, according to [pdf] an October 2011 forecast from Zenith Optimedia. Internet ad spend is expected to total about $72.5 billion USD this year and reach $96.4 billion in 2013.

Among some of the Highlights are

• Growth forecast for 2012 remains a reassuring 5.3%
• This picture is consistent with a history of ad market growth after many previous stock market shocks, assuming the world economy does not deteriorate dramatically
• Developing markets to increase their share of the global ad market from 31.0% in 2010 to 34.9% in 2013
• Internet the fastest-growing medium between 2010 and 2013 (14.6% a year)
• Television to contribute most new ad dollars (46% of total

While the US will still maintain a comfortable lead in ad spending in 2013, number three China’s spending will surge in the next two years, according to Marketingcharts  an October 2011 forecast from Zenith Optimedia. China, expected to spend $26.1 billion USD on major media advertising this year, will increase that figure almost 49% to $38.5 billion in 2013.

By comparison, the US will increase ad spend about 9%, from $151.7 billion this year to $166 billion in 2013. Number two Japan will also maintain its position, growing ad spend 3% from $46.1 billion to $47.6 billion

There are now two ‘developing’ markets in the world’s top ten ad markets, and there will be three in 2013. China is now the third-largest ad market in the world, and is catching up quickly with second-placed Japan. In 2005 China was 23% of the size of Japan, in 2010 it was 57% and by 2013 we predict it to be 82%. Brazil, at sixth place, is even closer to the UK: 81% of the size of the UK in 2010 and will be 89% in 2013. Russia, which was in 13th place in 2010, will be in tenth in 2013.

Display internet advertising spend, expected to reach $25.3 billion this year, should grow an impressive 39% to $35.2 billion in 2013. Similarly, paid search spend is forecast to grow 33%, from $35.2 billion to $46.9 billion. Classified internet ad spend, pegged at roughly $12 billion in 2011, is expected to grow a comparatively small 18% to $14.2 billion in two years
