after eight quarters apple, knocks out samsung, to emerge as no 1 smartphone oem

"after eight quarters apple, knocks out samsung, to emerge as no 1 smartphone marker"

Apple pipped Samsung to emerge as top smartphone vendor in the world with sale of 77038 thousand units compared to  76782 sold by Samsung in the last quarter of 2016

Apple toppled Samsung as the number one global smartphone player with 17.9% marketshare  in last quarter  according to  Gartner . The Q4,2016 October-December quarter of last year  saw a  7 percent year-on-year growth in smartphone sales, with overall sales reaching 432 million smartphone units . However For 2016 overall, smartphone sales  totaled nearly 1.5 billion units, an increase of 5 percent from 2015.

Last Quarter  saw Samsung finish second with a market share of 17.8 percent, just trailing Apple's 17.9% marketshare .However the difference between Apple and Samsung was too small for comfort with Apple just ahead  by  a marginal  0.1%

"This is the second consecutive quarter in which Samsung has delivered falling quarterly smartphone sales. Samsung's smartphone sales declined 8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016 and its share dropped by 2.9 percentage points year on year,"

Samsung's smartphone sales started to drop in the third quarter of 2016, and the decision to discontinue the Galaxy Note 7 slowed down sales of its smartphone portfolio in the fourth quarter, he added. Besides, Samsung is also facing growing competition in the mid-tier and entry-level smartphone segments from Huawei, Oppo, BBK and Gionee, which all saw their sales growing. The chinese invasion included smartphone brands like   Huawei, Oppo and BBK  which accounted for 9.5 percent, 6.2% and 6.2%  of smartphones sold to end users worldwide during the fourth quarter of 2016, respectively.

It has taken eight quarters for Apple to regain the No 1 global smartphone vendor ranking, but the positions of the two leaders have never been so close, with a difference of only 256,000 units. "The last time Apple was in the leading position was in the fourth quarter of 2014, when its sales were driven by its first ever large-screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

why samsung share price is trading at historic highs,in spite of its recall of 2.5million galaxy 7 smartphones

"mobile phones as a percentage of Samsung's total product portfolio"

Samsung's Mobile Phone Business as a part of its entire product Portfolio

Compounded by exploding Samsung galaxy 7 phones,Samsung smartphones are making up lesser number of devices among its entire portfolio.Post recall of Samsung's 2.5 million Galaxy 7 phones has not done much to dent the Samsung success story. Samsung Electronics’ share price, but since then the stock has recovered, and is now trading at its historic high of 17,48,000.00 KRW .So what explains this amazing come back by Samsung and its resilient share price ?A recent report suggests that initial drop in revenue of about $1.5 billion from lost smartphone sales. But it still expects the company to bring in about $103 billion in smartphone sales in 2016, which means that Samsung as a company will have a minimum impact due to the recall of Samsung galaxy 7. This is because as a company smartphones are  just one way Samsung Electronics makes money. The listed company, which is part of the larger Samsung Group, consists of four main divisions:

1)IT and Mobile Communications, which includes mobile devices, desktops, laptops, digital cameras, and network equipment
2) Display, which makes screens for mobile devices, computers, and televisions sold by Samsung and other manufacturers
3)Semiconductors
4)Consumer electronics, which makes appliances like refrigerators washing machines,TV's
Selling Smartphones is just one of Samsung's portfolio. It acts as a OEM to many mobile manufacturers ranging from iPhone to Huawaei to Google and many other Mobile handset manufactures to whom it provides, mobile displays,

Samsung  provides some of the iPhone's most important components: the flash memory that holds the phone's apps, music and operating software; the working memory, or DRAM; and the applications processor that makes the whole thing work. Together " Samsung's products" account for 26% of the component cost of an iPhone. This puts Samsung in the somewhat unusual position of supplying a significant proportion of one of its main rival's products, since Samsung also makes smartphones and tablet computers of its own. Apple is one of Samsung's largest customers, and Samsung is one of Apple's biggest suppliers.

samsung share price is trading at historic highs inspite of recall of galaxy 7"

This is actually part of Samsung's business model: acting as a supplier of components for others gives it the scale to produce its own products more cheaply.Samsung is also a market leader in OLED screens, a superior and more sophisticated screen technology than the LCD screens most phones have now.In Q2 2016, Samsung had 22% of the global market share for shipped smartphones, and it was the the world leader in mobile shipments.Even if this number continues to fall, Samsung will continue to make money by providing most of the Mobile Components supplies to other Mobile OEM's and this way could continue to compensate its smartphone losses

how samsung killed the blackberry star :the inside story

" the end of blackberry and the rise of samsung"

As smartphone market gathered crescendo with the launch of iPhone , RIM’s first signs of trouble started in US results. The iPhone's arrival in 2007 dented RIM’s market share but dint slowed its growth. But as Android gained traction,Blackberry showed signs of getting hit. For 7 straight quarters in a row, from late 2008 to 2010 summer RIM recorded revenues of around $2billion for each period followed by a dramatic slide quarter on quarter with sales dramatically falling to $1billion in the quarter ending August 2011. As Android siphoned off market share led by  droves of OEMs which lapped up Android to power their low cost handsets.

For RIM, this was the ultimate death knell. Meanwhile RIM’s share of Verizon’s smartphones sales dropped to a 14% from the last 3 months of 2010 from 60% a year earlier. The drop was also significant at Sprint, which saw blackberry shares fall from 63% to 22% and continuing the disaster ‘ T mobile share of RIM phones dropped from 60% to 18%. Never in the history of RIM it has confronted such a situation.

However another player which changed the dynamics of the smartphone market was Samsung. Samsung was the largest electronics component supplier in the world , which supplied Rivals, RIM and iphone componens for their phones. Due to Samsungs size and scale it could easily outspend, Nokia, RIM and Motorola in terms of Its huge marketing budgets

If Samsung lost a smartphone sale, it made its money by supplying the components to the winner. As a critical supplier, Samsung had access to the latest new technology ,priority on supply and the chance to have a first peek inside its competitor’s hardware. In the book, Loosing the signal, RIM's joint CEO, Jim Balsillie talks about the Samsung marketing budgets  ” In 2010 when I saw the huge splash made by Samsung, and got to know about its huge marketing budget, it have me the chills, and I knew that out crown jewel, Blackberry was now loosing its way to becoming a crackberry.

Chart of the day : ipad loosing its way in the tablet market

"ipad mini has been a disaster to ipad"
Statistic: Apple's iPad market share of global tablet shipments from first quarter 2012 to fourth quarter 2014 | Statista

Find more statistics at Statista

Apple's  seem to be loosing its leadership position in the tablet market . Apple was the first to enter this market back in  2010  and seems to   have lost their way since its heydays in 2013 when it was in its height of popularity. Tim Cook had termed the dip in sales a speed bump last year. However it seems that this bump is beginning to  slowly look like the  entire road  is bumpy

So how did this happen ? : Blurring of lines between the ipad mini and iphone and original ipad: The ipad mini killed the market for apple. The ipad was the kind of Tablet users liked. Stylishly designed..just the right size. The mini killed this market as " it only served to  giveusers the message that  even an standard smartphone can be a tablet .Plus the pricing played a big role with the iPhone 6 Plus costing  about the same as an iPad mini up front.

This was a typical positioning disaster you cant  be everything to everyone. The ipad mini started
cannibalizing its own  flagship brand . You can see  cannibalization of the iPad is shown in a chart from Credit Suiss

Phablets vs Tablets : has the 4 inches Screen Smartphones killed the Tablet star ?

the phablets have cannibalised the tablet market

The chart shows how Phablets has  sounded the death knell for Tablets

Below the cannibalization of the iPad is shown in a chart from Credit Suisse. Characterizing phablets as “4+ inches” seems a little out of date, but the point is clear, phablets like the iPhone 6 are eating into tablet share across the board.
