3)Microsoft with 9.9% global marketshare ranks 3rd and also has been the biggest gainer in terms of volumes and marketshare YoY ( .obviously due to the Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia)

THE TABLET WARS: Leaders and Laggards and also rans

The Tablet market gets close and dirty as Apple samsung continues to grow

The tablet market grew by 11% over last year. The figure would have been higher had it not been for a decline of 1.5% in the second quarter of 2014, as opposed to the first quarter. The reason for the decline: Large enterprises are holding off on purchasing decisions.

According to Jean Philippe Bouchard, IDC's director for tablets,Apple still leads the tablet market, but it hasn't had a good quarter as far as sales figures go. The iPad has lost ground to both Android and Windows tablets.

Apple shipped 13.3 million units, a decline of 9.3% year-on-year. The company's market share stood at 26.9%. Apple has announced plans to fight back, and it is pinning its hopes on the enterprise sector to drive growth.

Samsung, Apple's biggest rival, had a mixed year and shipped 8.5 million units in  Q2,  2014 and saw its market share increase by 1.6% yoy. Samsung struggled to maintain its momentum and saw its market share slip to 17.2% in the second quarter.Lenevo shipped 2.4 million units and moved up to the No 3 ranking, displacing Asus from its position.

The New iPhone 6 Photos Leaked By Taiwanese Pop Star  "Jimmy Lin : The Taiwanese pop star Jimmy Lin has once again done the unthinkable, He has leaked the iphone 6 which is to be launched late this year..Lin posted the image, first spottedGforGames, on Sina Weibo, which is the Chinese Twitter ( micro-blogging equivalent to Twitter,) and also shared his first-hand experience with the alleged iPhone 6.

Jim Lin had leaked the iphone 5Cm before it was  launched in 2013, when he posted the iPhone5 pictures last August at Weibo., (which later went on to be "  what was the genuine iphone 5 ). So Lin's leak might  turn out  to be  true this time too.

Among the new iphone-6 features are
  1. The metal black color
  2. Increased screen size
  3. Rounded edges
  4. Reduced thickness
  5. Reduced bezel size
  6. Side mounted power button

how the new iphone will look

Lin compared what he said is a silver-coloured iPhone6 side by side with the currently available iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S.and if the images are anything to go by we are looking at the 4.7in version of the handset along with a 5.5in model , both of which are strongly tipped to appear later in the year

An earlier leak suggested that one of the two alleged iPhone 6 models would come with a 960x1704 pixels resolution screen, compared to the 640x1136 pixels resolution found on the current iPhone models that sport 4-inch displays.

Why Apple vs Samsung Legal battles are Marketing Gimmicks

26% Apples Components are made by samsung

Apple loses bid for U.S. ban on Samsung smartphone sales | Reuters: "Apples bid for " stopping Samsung  smartphones from selling in US  got a setback after  A U.S. judge on Thursday rejected Apple's request for a permanent sales ban in the United States against some older Samsung smartphones, as Apple failed in producing meaningful evidence ( according to the Judge  as  Apples  patented features were a significant enough driver of consumer demand to warrant an injunction.

Apple and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd have been litigating for nearly three years over various smartphone features patented by Apple, such as the use of fingers to pinch and zoom on the screen, as well as design elements such as the phone's flat, black glass screen."

Apple and Samsung battles have seen wrangling over patents , for a long time. Ironically this  inspite of the symbiotic relationship the technology companies have .Consider this Apple is one of Samsung's largest customers, and Samsung is one of Apple's biggest suppliers. Both of them “ use  Taiwanese Supplier  Foxcon for components” based at plant in Shenzhen, China

The above chart by from iSuppli, shows who makes what inside the iPhone and the cost of the components  . Ironically Samsung turns out to be a particularly important supplier of the iPhone components including the flash memory that holds the phone's apps, music and operating software; the working memory, or DRAM; and the applications processor that makes the whole thing work. Together these account for 26% of the component cost of an iPhone.

So that brings us to the question .. Are these legal battles based on market realities or Market Gimmick

Consumer Electronics New Frontier : Curved Screens

Among the latest buzzwords across the Tech Industry has been " Curved Screens. Both LG and Samsung have placed huge bets on this technology as they believe that this is going to be " the one giant leap for " Consumer  Electronics Industry

Marketing Gimmickry aside, the technology behind these devices is the real achievement, because they point to a future where flexible materials have become a common fixture everywhere — and not just in the living room.

How does  Curved screens work ? Basically there are two kinds of screens : LCD and  OLED screens , which are seen in smartphones and your LCD TVs and could be applied to only flat surfaces .However  the breakthrough came in 2012.

This was when "Corning  Corp, the company behind Gorilla Glass unveiled a flexible kind of glass called WillowWillow is about as thin as a piece of paper and comes off the production line in gigantic, 300-meter-long rolls. It's been chemically coated to conduct electricity and enhance transparency. According to Vinita Jakhanwal, an industry analyst at IHS, these and similar types of glass make it possible to build rounded surfaces that can accept LCD or OLED layers.

Samsung is the first OEM  to deliver curved TVs  with 105 inch  screen in a serious way, debuting two series of mainstream LED LCD models, one with 4K resolution and one with standard 1080p, at CES 2014.

Samsung Galaxy Gear a Precursor to Challenge Google Glass, with Galaxy Gear Glass

galaxy Gear

For a watch, the Galaxy Gear sports some pretty impressive technology: It has a tiny but useable 1.6-inch touchscreen, 4 gigabytes of storage, 24 hours of battery life, a 1.9 megapixel camera, a speaker and a microphone. Samsung essentially shrunk a smartphone down until it was functional as a wristwatch.( source : Yahoo News)

However a recent  developments indicate that : Samsung Gear us a trial launch of  its Galaxy Gear which will compete and challenge  Google Glass

In 2014 ,Samsung will launch a Google Glass rival, currently dubbed the Galaxy Gear Glass, sometime in Q2 2014 an insider claims, supposedly expanding its wearable family with a head-worn computer. The work-in-progress gadget is expected to arrive in April or May next year, according to Eldar Murtazin, following up the Galaxy Gear smartwatch which Samsung launched in Berlin last month

Murtazin’s track record on pre-empting official announcements is mixed, though not for nothing has the Russian phone reviewer built his reputation for early access. That’s included a number of Samsung phones, though he’s yet to say who his source is on this wearable rumor

It is estimated , that  the Google Glass will have a formidable competitor  in the form of a custom 800MHz low-power single core Exynos processor of Samsung’s own making, paired with ARM Mali-400 graphics and 512MB of memory, to keep power consumption down while still providing enough grunt to run the pared-back interface
