Digital Technology and Demographic shift : The Rise of Seniors

Though seniors (adults age 65 and older) have spent much of their lives without the technology that younger generations have grown up with, fully six in ten (60%) say they use the Internet, participating in a variety of activities such as social networking, playing games, and buying products, according to report by Forrester Research.
Among surveyed online seniors (age 65+):
91% use email.
59% have purchased products online in the previous three months.
49% have a Facebook account.


According to Forbes ,. In 2010 there were more than 40 million people age 65 or older who were living in the United States, and this number is expected to grow to more than 88 million – representing 20 percent of the population – by 2050.

Instead of sending out 500-page catalogs, Sears is engaging customers on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. It has more than two million likes on Facebook. Among its three main Twitter handles (@Sears, @SearsStyle and @SearsDeals), Sears has more than 125,000 followers.


A recent report published in September 2012  shows some inportant pointers on where Social Media is heading . Marketers, self styled advertising professionals and the real advertising professionals please do not forget ' that Seniors are a huge segment" even in the online space according to  Pew Internet & American Life Project:
  • One in three online seniors uses social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn
  • From April 2009 to May 2011, social networking site use among internet users ages 65 and older grew 150%, from 13% in 2009 to 33% in 2011 
  • Half of essadults ages 65 and older are online
Nearly 80 million Baby Boomers turned 65 this year, “officially” considered senior citizens. This most recent Pew report is a snapshot of a nation embracing digital communications to a breadth and degree heretofore unimagined, with far-reaching implications for every facet of ordinary and extraordinary daily living as these new technologies redefine aging, connectivity and commerce.

Move over young guns, the seniors are blasting their way into facebook big time, recent Nielsen data shows  adult users ( seniors) have almost doubled their numbers , when it comes to going social, with their Mobile.
