Indian smartphone shipments falls by 48%, Xiaomi is no 1

India's Smartphone Market Share :(Counterpoint Research)

Smartphone shipments in India fell 48 per cent in Q2 2020  this year to 17.3 million units as the country faced an unprecedented shutdown due to COVID-19 pandemic, research firm Canalys said.

In a report, Canalys said smartphone vendors faced a "diabolical situation", dealing with both low supply due to a complete halt in production and diminished demand, as online and offline retailers were prohibited from selling smartphones.a diabolical situation, dealing with both low supply due to a complete halt in production and diminished demand, as online and offline retailers were prohibited from selling smartphones.

Xiaomi was the market leader in India, capturing 31% of overall market share, shipping 5.3 million smartphone units in the quarter. Vivo maintained the second position, shipping 3.7 million units, and grew its market share to 21.3% from 19.9% in Q1 2020. Samsung was third, with 2.9 million smartphones shipped, and also saw exports impacted as its largest manufacturing plant outside of Vietnam shut down for most of Q2.

Oppo edged out Realme to take the fourth position as it shipped 2.2 million units, compared to Realme’s 1.7 million. As local production suffered through the early stages of Q2, vendors like Xiaomi and Oppo imported smartphones to meet pent-up demand. “It’s been a rocky road to recovery for the smartphone market in India,” said Canalys Analyst Madhumita Chaudhary. “While vendors witnessed a crest in sales as soon as markets opened, production facilities struggled with staffing shortages on top of new regulations around manufacturing, resulting in lower production output.

The fluidity of the lockdown situation across India has had a deep-rooted effect on vendors’ go-to-market strategies. Xiaomi and Vivo have undertaken an O2O (offline-to-online) strategy to support their massive offline network. Online channels, too, while seeing a positive effect of the pandemic on market share, have seen sales decline considerably.” India is also battling floods in parts of Eastern India, and a stand-off with China in the Northern borders. “Luck is not on the side of the Chinese vendors,” says Canalys Research Analyst Adwait Mardikar. “There has been public anger directed towards China. The combinations of this and the recently announced ‘Aatmanirbhar’ (self-sufficient) initiatives by the government have pushed Chinese smartphone vendors into the eye of the public storm.”

Canalys estimates that over 96% of all smartphones sold in India in 2019 were manufactured/assembled locally. “Vendors are driving the message of ‘Made in India’ to consumers and are eager to position their brand as ‘India-first.’ Despite the sentiment, the effect on Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Realme is likely to be minimal, as alternatives by Samsung, Nokia, or even Apple are hardly price-competitive,” added Mardikar.

Apple was the least impacted among the top-10 vendors as shipments fell just 20% year-on-year to just over 250,000 in Q2 2020. The vendor has recently announced its plans to diversify its supply chain and is pushing its major partners Foxconn and Wistron to increase its investments in India. “The transition to 5G is the next big opportunity, and Jio’s announcement of readiness to deploy 5G, as soon as spectrum is made available, has provided a ray of hope to most vendors who have been beaten by the current pandemic,”

after eight quarters apple, knocks out samsung, to emerge as no 1 smartphone oem

"after eight quarters apple, knocks out samsung, to emerge as no 1 smartphone marker"

Apple pipped Samsung to emerge as top smartphone vendor in the world with sale of 77038 thousand units compared to  76782 sold by Samsung in the last quarter of 2016

Apple toppled Samsung as the number one global smartphone player with 17.9% marketshare  in last quarter  according to  Gartner . The Q4,2016 October-December quarter of last year  saw a  7 percent year-on-year growth in smartphone sales, with overall sales reaching 432 million smartphone units . However For 2016 overall, smartphone sales  totaled nearly 1.5 billion units, an increase of 5 percent from 2015.

Last Quarter  saw Samsung finish second with a market share of 17.8 percent, just trailing Apple's 17.9% marketshare .However the difference between Apple and Samsung was too small for comfort with Apple just ahead  by  a marginal  0.1%

"This is the second consecutive quarter in which Samsung has delivered falling quarterly smartphone sales. Samsung's smartphone sales declined 8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016 and its share dropped by 2.9 percentage points year on year,"

Samsung's smartphone sales started to drop in the third quarter of 2016, and the decision to discontinue the Galaxy Note 7 slowed down sales of its smartphone portfolio in the fourth quarter, he added. Besides, Samsung is also facing growing competition in the mid-tier and entry-level smartphone segments from Huawei, Oppo, BBK and Gionee, which all saw their sales growing. The chinese invasion included smartphone brands like   Huawei, Oppo and BBK  which accounted for 9.5 percent, 6.2% and 6.2%  of smartphones sold to end users worldwide during the fourth quarter of 2016, respectively.

It has taken eight quarters for Apple to regain the No 1 global smartphone vendor ranking, but the positions of the two leaders have never been so close, with a difference of only 256,000 units. "The last time Apple was in the leading position was in the fourth quarter of 2014, when its sales were driven by its first ever large-screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

great britain and united states sees iPhone 7 as the fastest selling smartphone device,

Despite predictions to the contrary, Apple's iPhone 7 emerges as the top smartphone selling brand spot in Great Britain

Data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that Apple's iPhone 7 has become the fastest selling and the highest selling smartphone device in Great Britain, and the US. Apple's iPhone 7 was the top selling device, pushing the previous top device (iPhone SE) to third, while iPhone 6s remained the second best-selling device for the 3 months ending October 2016

In the same period Japan stands at the top in the list of regions where iOS holds the greatest share, with 51.7% of smartphone sales, followed by 44% in Great Britain and 40.5% in the US. Meanwhile Android market share saw similar growth across a number of regions, declining only in the US (by 5.6 percentage points), and in Japan by less than a percent

Europe's big five markets for android include Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. However with iPhone 7 launch, Apple's iOS achieved year-on-year growth across most regions in EU5 except Germany, where it fell 2.7% points to 16.5% of smartphone sales. iPhone 7 cracked the top 10 smartphones sold in all regions but Spain, which remains dominated by the Android ecosystem at 91.7% of all sales

This comes in-spite of projection by some reports that iPhone 7 might not be able to replicate its iPhone 6 success in United Kingdom as it did in 2015.The company reportedly sold 25% fewer iPhones during the weekend after its launch than it did during the same period in 2015, following the launch of the iPhone 6s .

Meanwhile, DigiTimes recently carried a report that chip orders for Apple's iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are likely to be 20% lower in the first quarter of 2017 than in the same period of 2016. The report further said that Apple reportedly asked manufacturing partners to carry chips for 50 million units of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in the third quarter of 2016, but only 45 million units in the fourth quarter. The unverified reports contrast with initial indications from mobile operators in the US, which said that first-day sales of the new iPhone 7 were better than expected.

why samsung share price is trading at historic highs,in spite of its recall of 2.5million galaxy 7 smartphones

"mobile phones as a percentage of Samsung's total product portfolio"

Samsung's Mobile Phone Business as a part of its entire product Portfolio

Compounded by exploding Samsung galaxy 7 phones,Samsung smartphones are making up lesser number of devices among its entire portfolio.Post recall of Samsung's 2.5 million Galaxy 7 phones has not done much to dent the Samsung success story. Samsung Electronics’ share price, but since then the stock has recovered, and is now trading at its historic high of 17,48,000.00 KRW .So what explains this amazing come back by Samsung and its resilient share price ?A recent report suggests that initial drop in revenue of about $1.5 billion from lost smartphone sales. But it still expects the company to bring in about $103 billion in smartphone sales in 2016, which means that Samsung as a company will have a minimum impact due to the recall of Samsung galaxy 7. This is because as a company smartphones are  just one way Samsung Electronics makes money. The listed company, which is part of the larger Samsung Group, consists of four main divisions:

1)IT and Mobile Communications, which includes mobile devices, desktops, laptops, digital cameras, and network equipment
2) Display, which makes screens for mobile devices, computers, and televisions sold by Samsung and other manufacturers
4)Consumer electronics, which makes appliances like refrigerators washing machines,TV's
Selling Smartphones is just one of Samsung's portfolio. It acts as a OEM to many mobile manufacturers ranging from iPhone to Huawaei to Google and many other Mobile handset manufactures to whom it provides, mobile displays,

Samsung  provides some of the iPhone's most important components: the flash memory that holds the phone's apps, music and operating software; the working memory, or DRAM; and the applications processor that makes the whole thing work. Together " Samsung's products" account for 26% of the component cost of an iPhone. This puts Samsung in the somewhat unusual position of supplying a significant proportion of one of its main rival's products, since Samsung also makes smartphones and tablet computers of its own. Apple is one of Samsung's largest customers, and Samsung is one of Apple's biggest suppliers.

samsung share price is trading at historic highs inspite of recall of galaxy 7"

This is actually part of Samsung's business model: acting as a supplier of components for others gives it the scale to produce its own products more cheaply.Samsung is also a market leader in OLED screens, a superior and more sophisticated screen technology than the LCD screens most phones have now.In Q2 2016, Samsung had 22% of the global market share for shipped smartphones, and it was the the world leader in mobile shipments.Even if this number continues to fall, Samsung will continue to make money by providing most of the Mobile Components supplies to other Mobile OEM's and this way could continue to compensate its smartphone losses

samsung, apple sees 18% decline after jointly selling 23% of global smartphones

"samsung, apple sees 18% decline after jointly selling 23% of global smartphones"

Post Samsung halted production  of its Note 7 handsets and said it was scrapping the 4.3 million handsets it had already manufactured, the market for smartphones specially the Phablets phone have opened up. As smartphone  sales mature and reach reasonable volumes with lower churn rates, with users not changing their smartphones as frequently as they used too 2 to 3 years ago, bigger size screen size will be a norm rather a exception.

Meanwhile  also helping matters are that OEM's and Handset makers  have increasingly tried to offer a bigger and larger screen as an option, which seems to be paying off. With Samsung already facing a growing churn and growing dissatisfaction in the market and Apple reporting that it had underestimated demand for its largest model, the iPhone 7 Plus, leading to a backlog in orders. This market seemed to be wide open for a spectacular fight.Google Pixel and Huawei Mate 9 could provide a lot of choices this holiday season. However its reported that Google has locked itself into exclusive deals with single operators in the US, UK and Australia - struck before the Note 7 fiasco - which will limit sales.

Meanwhile Samsung has seen a 13% decline in its year to year smartphone sales July -September,2016 sales as compared to same time last year. Apple too has seen a 5% decline . However Samsung with 23% market share and Apple with 13% market share make up 130 million smartphones out of 360 million smartphones  sold in last quarter of 2016. This means that even after selling 23% of global smartphone last quarter,It has been loosing market share compared to a year ago.

Huawei mate 9 large screen smartphone battery to last for 48 hours with 30 mins of charging

Huawei has decided to take on Samsung's might as the  industry first smartphone which is competing directly with new large-screened smartphone ( 5.9 inc) in the wake of Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 disaster. Huawei new large screen smartphone  called "The Mate 9" handsets are among the first to be powered by Android 7 and come in two designs: a model with a 1080p "full HD" display, and a Porsche-branded edition with nearly twice the resolution. The smartphone bears a dual rear camera setup designed in collaboration with Leica. Huawei Mate 9 smartphone will be available for sale presently in China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and the UAE in the first wave of launches, with a suggested retail price of EUR 699 . Other countries will follow soon after, Huawei says. The company separately also unveiled the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 9, with a EUR 1,395 price tag. The Huawei Fit activity tracker was also launched.

According to BBC Technology Like the Note 7, Huawei's new phones also feature a "supercharging" battery technology that promises to deliver a day's worth of power within 30 minutes and a full two-day charge in 90 minutes. The company's senior product manager, Michael Seitz, told the BBC that the system had been through a nine-month development and testing process and had been checked by an independent research lab. "It keeps really cool in your hand even while recharging," he said.

how blackberry founders sabotaged their first tablet "playbook"

By the spring of 2010, when the iPad was sweeping across the world ,Mike Lazaridis was swept with the urgency to keep up with the tablet craze .The smartphone maker initially  tinkered with the possibility of producing a handheld computer larger that the PDA nut smaller than a PC. However it decided to  launch a 7 inches screen tablet. As the  iPad threatened RIM's  positioning and dominance of its enterprise wireless hand held wireless market, it had to react to iPad.
With the purchase of   technology company, RIM had a secret weapon, QNX. The QNX OS specialty was creating microkernels , which was a building block of OS ,but not the complete OS . However it  wasn’t efficient on the battery front, which was one of blackberry’s core strength.Compounding the problems was the deadline which was set to the new Playbook launch. This mean that there wasn’t enough time to get the blackberry email on the playbook. For this the email application had to be rewritten as RIM wanted to provide one corporate email from both devices which meant that it also had to update its enterprise software which was deployed with over 25,000 of enterprise customers.Given the deadline to launch the tablet to take on iPad, this was impossible

The result was that Playbook’s customers also had to own the blackberry if they had to access corporate email, making the device as a accessory to blackberry, which was its Flagship device rather than a standalone tablet. What this  meant  for consumers  to access email at Playbook was perplexing .Among the series of  steps to access corporate email 1)They had to download a bridge software app to their devices.2)set up to pair with the smartphone to its playbook 3)Then users had to wait for several minutes for the bridged email box on their playbook to fill up with their blackberry smartphone email. This had to be repeated every time since the email box vanished from the playbook as soon as the connection was cut If the kept both the devices, bridged for long, the wireless activity drained very quickly

For consumer this was  ridiculous as  in comparison ,the ipad enabled user to access their personal as well as corporate email, at a touch of the screen .What was more perplexing was that “ why did RIM take these cumbersome steps, instead of just giving access to hotmail or Gmail In the book “ "Loosing the connection" which chronicles the fall of blackberry, author Sean Silcof , states that Mike Lazaridis was so enamored with the Bridge concept theta RIM dint bother to develop the capability in time for the launch As apposed to this, the ipad came with the email box. The fascination of the founders with technology without understanding consumers preferences sounded the final obituary of the company

for the first time in a decade apple's iphone sales hits speedbreaker

"iphone hits speed breakers "

Apple announced a sharp slowdown in sales growth for its iPhone

Apple's  honeymoon period with its most successful product, iPhone  seems to be finally over, with the company reporting " flat sales in a clear indication of  iPhone's  slowest growth since the product's 2007 launch  as Apple  warned investors that "sales will fall for the first time later this year.

"sales of ihome was at roughly 74.6 and 74.8 million in Q3 2014 and Q32015"

The company sold 74.8m of its flagship devices in the final three months of 2015, compared to  74.46m iPhones  it told during the same period in 2014.. which points to the fact that : iPhone sales has now plateaued

Apple's fundamentalas as a company is beyond comparison and its  one of the most cash rich company in the world with assets totalling $293bn, with $205bn of that in cash.
However the worrying point for apple, is that the company is dependent on the iPhone magic wand more than it should do as it created more volatility and risk for the company something that wall street will not like

  • Apple's ipads meanwhile have been shrinking for more than 18 months. Apple sold 16.1million iPads in the last three months of 2015, down from 21.4m tablets in the same quarter last year.
  • Mac sales too, declined  with Apple selling 4% fewer  ending up with 5.3 million sales (YoY)
  • Apple Watch, grew sharply to $4.4bn, up from $2.6bn in the third quarter of 2015 (when the company first reported Watch sales).
  • Other products in the category include Beats accessories, Apple Pay and Apple TV

3 riders about AT & T new unlimited data plan

AT&T New unlimited data plan comes at a time when most wireless carriers have either eliminated or raised the price of unlimited data plans. Sprint and T-Mobile, the only two carriers that still offer unlimited data to new customers, have bumped up prices.

"AT&T new unlimited data plan with riders"

AT&T's unlimited data plan is back, with strings attached. The first rider is  that to  get this unlimited data plan, consumers should also  subscribe to its TV service (only for customers who also subscribe to its DirecTV or U-Verse TV services. Enrollment began Tuesday.)

So does it technically offer unlimited data : Rider 2  .AT &T will only slow the connection for any customer who is in a data-congested area and who in a given month exceeds 22 gigabytes of data. This is equivalent to someone streaming 50 hours of video and 250 hours of music and then spending another 220 hours on the Internet each month.

Rider 3 : How much is the actual cost :The monthly cost for the data is $60, plus $40 for each line. The fourth line is free. This means one line costs $100 a month, two lines are $140, and then three or four lines cost $180. .

Who should go for this plan :This is a pretty good deal for anyone who needs a paid TV service and is a heavy user of wireless data. Specifically, it's best for individuals who use more than 10GB to 15GB of data per month
