Microsoft Unveils Windows Phone 7.1 Mango

Microsoft took the wraps off "Mango," an update to its Windows Phone 7 platform that includes more than 500 new features designed to improve multitasking, offer more dynamic information and make apps and the OS work together more efficiently. With Mango, Microsoft is hoping to use Windows Phone 7 as a base, building out features and capabilities in the OS to make phones “smarter and easier.”Mango tools will be available for developers today and is slated for a fall release. In addition to continuing its hardware partnerships with LG, HTC and Samsung, the company announced that Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE will also release Mango handsets.

According to Mobilecrunch,The good news is that the update will be free for all Windows Phone 7 customers. The bad news is that owners will have to wait until the fall to receive it. In addition to a slew of new features, Microsoft also announced new hardware partners including Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE. Microsoft has once again chosen Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor to power the next generation of Windows Phones.

The biggest hardware maker, however, will be Nokia. The first Nokia phone to run Windows Phone will run Mango. Microsoft didn’t explicitly promise a fall debut, but says that Nokia handsets running Mango are already in the lab.Mango will include and use Internet Explorer 9, which uses hardware acceleration and supports HTML5 to deliver a quick experience. When tested against the iPhone 4, the BlackBerry Torch, and the Samsung Droid Charge, the Windows Phone running Mango blew the other browsers out of the water, delivering 27 frames per second compared to BlackBerry’s 4 fps and Android’s 10 fps.
