State of Digital Ecosystem in Philippines

Place of Internet Access in Philippines
According to Yahoo!-Nielsen Net Index 2009-2010, 71% of Philippines Internet users access Internet from Internet café in 2009, compared to 27% of users who access from home (Chart 3). However, in 2010, there is a big shift from shared access to private access. Internet users from Internet café fall to 69% in 2009, while users accessed from home increase to 31%.
Many Filipinos opt for Internet café, which seem to be around every corner in most places, rather than paying for a computer and home Internet. An hour to rent a computer at one of the Internet cafes in the Philippines costs about 10 to 20 pesos (about 50 cents USD). A single text message may only cost 2 cents to send, but with an hour of online time a person can message hundreds of messages.

Rise of Mobile Internet
Access of mobile Internet has increased, from 0% in 2009 to 5% in 2010. Attractive tariffs is one of the driving force for the increase in Internet access through mobile phones, and it is predicted to see an increase usage in the future. Mobile Internet is more popular among young adults between the age of 20 to 39 years old. The top 2 mobile Internet activities in Philippines are using Messaging to send or read instant messages and reading or sending emails.
In the decade since 2000 the number of mobile telephone subscribers has grown by almost 80 million and was approaching 85 million by June 2010. Around 1.8 billion SMS messages were being sent every day in the Philippines by 2009. This was the largest SMS volume in the world, the Philippines accounting for more than 10% of global SMS at one stage and the country’s mobile operators were reported to be generating the highest proportion of non-voice revenues in the world. But as an indication of the constant change in the mobile market the SMS market had started to decline in 2010 as the impact of Internet-based social networks started to have an impact on SMS usage.

The Philippines has a high mobile diffusion rate: mobile subscriptions have now reached 80% of the population. From just 34,000 mobile subscriptions in 1991, mobile subscribers have reached almost 75 million in 2010 . Almost four in five Filipinos own a mobile phone.

The Philippines currently stands as the country with the largest volume of SMS messages sent and received in the world, with 2 billion SMS sent every day. Philippines has been nicknamed as “The SMS Capital of the World“.In an infographic released by US-based technology and social media news blog Mashable.com, the average Filipino mobile subscriber sent an average of 600 text messages per month in 2009, or 43% more than their US counterparts.
