Microsoft finally announced its much anticipated CEO. A Microsoft Insider Satya Nadella  who has spent his last 22 years with the company “was heralded as the news CEO. This comes  in somewhat difficult times for the IT Giant as  the windows revolution that catapulted ” personal computing power to masses is on the verge of extinction with Smartphones, Tablets, Mobile Web and Connected Devices taking over the ” computing space” and Apple and Google breathing down on Microsoft’s neck

Indian born American Satya Nadella, 46, replaces Steve Ballmer effective immediately after a five-month search, Microsoft said in a statement on Tuesday. Bill Gates, the company’s first CEO, will step aside as chairman and devote more time to product development while remaining on the board and running his philanthropic foundation. John Thompson, the director who led the CEO search, becomes chairman.

While Nadella brings an enormous expertise on the  cloud and enterprise  platform he will need to boost Microsoft’s presence in consumer markets, where rivals have seized the lead. The first question on the minds of critics is whether the Microsoft veteran of 22 years can deliver the same fresh thinking as an outsider

Nadella  Professional and Academic Credentials

Why Google Re Sold Motorola at a $7billion Loss to Lenevo

By selling Motorola, Google is shifting to what it does best  and  is an acknowledgment that Google is better off focusing on its core competencies — making software and selling ads — particularly as the profit margins for phones are shrinking all across the world

Its the end of the  Google’s Tryst with  Motorola Mobility”.Motorola has just been jettisoned and dumped  by Google, which  the Search Giant acquired 2  years ago for a record  $12.6 billion .

Motorola’s  new parent will be Lenevo ,who paid $ 2.9 billion   to Google  for  buying off the earstwhile Mobile Giant . So  does  that mean  that   Google  failed to  integrate  Motorala’s patents and its hardware Legacy  ecosystem? Does this also signal the  end of ” Google’s Mobile  Web Initiatives to take over the ” Mobile OS/.HS  specially the hardware ( operating system  and Hardware)

However Industry experts  remain baffled about Google selling Motorola phone business to Lenovo for $2.9 billion –  “Google is selling Motorola’s smartphone business to Lenovo for $2.9 billion, a price that makes Google’s biggest acquisition look like its most expensive mistake  according to  a tech journal

The sell off allows ” Google ” clear the financial mess  headache that has plagued the internet company since buying Motorola Mobility for $12.4 billion in 2012.However Google is also keeping most of the patents that came with the Motorola purchase.

In the “Meantime “Motorola has lost nearly $2 billion since Google took over, while trimming its workforce from 20,000 to 3,800. Google had previously sold company’s set-top operations last year to Arris Group Inc. for $2.35 billion. Google is also keeping most of the patents that came with the Motorola purchase.

Microsoft Products Contributing the Most Revenue in 2012

The Server and Tools division generated more revenue than the Windows division in the last fiscal year.

The Windows division is still much more profitable, earning $11.5 billion compared versus $7.4 billion for Servers & Tools. And one of the reasons Windows generated less revenue than Server & Tools is that Windows 7 is at the end of its run.

Server and Tools is the division that sells server versions of Windows, database software, Azure cloud services, software-development tools, system-management products and enterprise services. While the U.S. smartphone population has more than doubled in size over the past two years, the population of Microsoft phone owners has declined.

The State Of The App Economy in 2012 : Developer Insights

Developers are focusing more on iOS and Android, and moving away from platforms like Blackberry.

Facebook is a developer’s best friend. The social network is by far the most popular promotional tool used by developers.

More developers are planning to start making apps for Windows than any other platform, though that doesn’t necessarily mean they will.

Android is the platform of choice throughout the developing world.

The State Of The App Economy in 2012 – Business Insider: “In the five years since the iPhone came out, there has been a gold rush to develop apps, but a new report shows just how hard this business can be.

Vision Mobile, a market analysis and strategy firm, surveyed more than 1,500 developers worldwide and found that one in three apps generates $500 or less a month, which means developers have to find other sources of income to get by.

On average, developers make between $1,200-$3,900 per app each month, though some platforms prove more lucrative than others. For example, iOS developers surveyed make more per app each month on average ($3,693)  than Android developers ($2,735), but both fall short of what Blackberry developers earn per app each month ($3,853)

The chart above  provides a summary of some of the big findings from Vision Mobile’s report on the state of the app economy in 2012.”

PC Shipments Comparison : Windows vs Apple Devices :

When Windows 95 launched in 1995 it negated most of the advantages of the ease of use of the Macintosh and the PC market took off. The ratio reached 56 in 2004 when 182.5 million PCs were sold vs. 3.25 million Macs.
During the second half of the 90s it was already clear that Windows won the PC platform war. Windows had an  advantage that seemed unsurmountable.

Statistics show that Microsoft Windows has approximately 91% of the market share, while the Apple Mac OS has around 5% of the market share. The other 4% is owned by other operating systems such as Linux.

For the past 20 quarters, sales of Apple Macs  have grown faster than the PC market Apple Macintosh, was the first successful personal computer to feature a mouse and a graphical user interface (GUI), and it was introduced on the 24th of January 1984. About a year later, Microsoft introduced Microsoft Windows in November 1985 in response to the growing interest in the GUIs.

When the Macintosh was launched in 1984, computers running the MS-DOS operating system were nearing a dominant position in the market. The  IBM PC,were quickly cloned and four years later “PCs” were selling at the rate of 2 million/yr.  The Mac only managed 372k units in its first year.

PC was outselling the Mac by a factor of nearly 6. It turned out to be a high point. The ratio by which the PC outsold the Mac only increased from there.

When Windows 95 launched in 1995 it negated most of the advantages of the ease of use of the Macintosh and the PC market took off. The ratio reached 56 in 2004 when 182.5 million PCs were sold vs. 3.25 million Macs.(source : Asymco)

WinTel to Limit iPad’s global market share under 50% in 2013

Intel & Microsoft hope to push iPad’s global market share under 50% in 2013:

According to DigiTimes Intel and Microsoft have been working closely with partners to develop new tablets based on the forthcoming Windows 8 operating system, which will launch this fall. The sources indicated that Microsoft will release Windows 8 for traditional PCs to device makers in September, while Windows RT, the newly announced name for the ARM-based version, will be issued some time after.

A total of 32 Windows 8 tablets are expected to be available this year. Participating manufacturers Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asustek, and Toshiba are expected to launch models by the end of 2012.

Windows 8 tablets from Lenovo and Acer are expected to be priced as low as $300, to take on low-end Android tablets, while more expensive and powerful models will target Apple’s iPad. Those tablets will reportedly cost as much as $1,000; Apple’s most expensive iPad model with a 64-gigabyte capacity and wireless cellular connectivity is $829.

Intel has been looking to make up for lost ground in the mobile space ever since Apple decided that Intel’s Atom processors weren’t efficient enough to run the iPad. Instead, Apple developed its own new ARM chip design, which it dubbed A4, that debuted in the first-generation iPad.

Microsoft Controls 77% US Web Traffic, Android,iOS struggles

The chart above shows the share of platforms driving traffic to websites in the U.S. It’s not a perfect measure of which platform is the most used, but it’s a good short hand representation since most users surf the web with each operating system.
While Windows remains dominant, it’s becoming less important. Over the last six months, it lost a few percentage points to iOS, as you can see.

Despite the growth of mobile platforms, Windows remains the number one operating system by a long shot, according to data from comScore.

Stepping back further, six years ago it controlled 90% of the market. And there doesn’t seem to be any reason to believe Windows is going to reverse the trend anytime soon.

At the end of last year Android’s unit share reached 51% which is down from about 57% during the third quarter. iOS reached 23%, followed by Symbian at 12%, RIM at 9%, Bada at 2.4%, Windows Phone at 1.6% and Other at 1%
